Being a newbie T keeper, I find myself amazed at my three T's behavior and am constantly taking an unobtrusive peek just to see what they're doing. Whether they're eating, webbing, or just watching me watching them-- they're fascinating.

Now, I can add that they are a source of family time.

My fifteen year old nephew and I have always been close, but we've been feeling some distance lately. He's getting older, and old Aunt Brandy just isn't 'down' with the times. However.. as soon as I showed him the slings, the sling house and all the nifty little things these guys do, we have had some wonderful times, just in the short amount of time I've had my boys (and/or girls!) How wonderful is that, I ask you??

Just a gushy Aunt moment I wanted to share.

It's pretty great, really. Today he and I putzed around making ready some new sling houses for a few new arrivals I'm purchasing. How many fifteen year olds are settled enough to want to something like that? And the kicker is -he- asked if he could help! Just too cool. :)

That really is an awsome thing. None of my aunts or uncles even live in the same state as me until I tured 23. It took my grandmother dying to even come close to getting to know them. I am kinda envious of your relationship him. I hope he stays involved.

Coincidentally, the only family member that I feel like isn't just humoring me when I talk about tarantulas is MY aunt. I go and visit her quite often, and she always asks me how they are doing, and always asks questions about them.

I love this hobby. The first T (A. versicolor sling, now over 2in) I brought home took a bit. My boyfriend claimed that if it ever got out he would grab the cats and wait outside until I got home. Now we have a total of 17 captive spiders in my house, 14 of which are tarantulas. My boyfriend now has his very own B. smithi, as well as 1 female brown widow, and 1 female black widow that he personally cares for. (Went from fearing T's to owning a spider that HAS actually killed people). We spend out days off together observing, caring for, and talking about our spiders for hours on end. Such an awesome hobby to share with others :) If they are willing, of course.

I do, too. He's asked about getting one, but he understands that this isn't a 'fad of the moment' kind of hobby. I'm very staunch about being a good pet owner-- you get a pet, you keep, care for and love it for life. I would love to help him get his first tarantula-- but not until I see a long-term interest-- for his AND his possible future tarantula's welfare. :) I'm sorry to hear you haven't gotten to know your aunts/uncles for a long time, but no better time than the present-- and a very cool thing is the family we all have here! ;)

Being supportive of his interests is what has been a bonding experience for my nephew and I. The problem is, as he's gotten older his interests have changed and they are things that 'antiquaited' aunt Brandy just doesn't 'get'. This being a new hobby-- it's cool to have someone to explore it with that isn't squeamish! So I fully understand where you're coming from. ;)

Just goes to show how awesome nature can be. Even our eight legged friends can bring people closer-- and once you're interest is peaked, you're hooked!! :)
