I can't seem to get the lighting quite right - any suggestions?

Let me know what you think...

I think a light blue background may be easier on the eyes. Atleast some sort of none bright color that still allows the T to stand out.

I agree a contrasting color that isn't to obtrusive to the eyes would be best. then your lighting problem shouldn't be a hard fix at all

I have a friend around here who does these pictures very well, I don't know how he does them though...?

My suggestion for the lighting would be to direct it toward the spider at an angle, instead of flat-on. This will increase the contrast, as well as make the hairs stand out quite a bit. It will also give your photo a lot more depth. Also, you may try softening the light by making a filter out of tissue paper, or something similar, or bouncing it off of a piece of a light object, such as a wall.

Not a bad photograph at all, though.

Some people seem to really like the photos on white backgrounds. I dislike them. For me, they're distracting... sort of like the white overpowers my eye and pulls my focus away. I've seen some shots on some darker backdrops that I do like a lot though.

Yep...I'd go with a darker background as Eric states.
