so i was at the local Petco before, and i saw a pretty nice looking MM G. porteri. then i saw another cage with a porteri in it nearby. (both were labeled as "Chilean rose hair"s, btw) i thought that maybe i could get them and try breeding, but then i looked into the second cage and saw...another MM.

oh, well.

got my mm rosea from there too. they seem to have a large stock of MM's. I dont usually buy live animals from there because of poor conditions.

this specific Petco is pretty good to its reptile section. the two others in my general area have been downsizing there, though.

Makes sense if most (which is likely) are wild caught because they would be out and about looking for females when a collector found them. If they want to get more girls, they have to actually dig them up or look for them outside the burrow at night.

I'm pretty sure they are digging up females as well, since thousands are being imported every year. Its not hard to find a female at a pet shop.

Peeked in recently when I went for frozen pinkies, always hate looking at their T's here. It's always the same A Avic labeled Pink toe. Anyway they had a G Rosea labled Pink toe as well with no water bowl. I didn't look at the legs but in the past I have got females from pet stores. To say all male is incorrect agree with the above they dig them up too. There are a few though that order from breeders. The list is small but they are out there.

On a side note I did apply there and was told I didn't have enough experience. :? What! It's cage cleaning for 1, 2 the girl doing it now is scared of everything, 3 umm might want to recheck my background I worked at and grew up in a pet store starting at 6 years old going to work with mom everyday plus showed and groomed dogs. During the interview she asked me about tarantulas and if I had a problem with them, mind you I have caught T's for her in the past while she is using an over sized box almost screaming trying to get an A Avic in it (like it's just going to jump in there or something), and told her no actually I have quite a few of different species and even began breeding this year. She said, "well we order them but they keep eating each other every time. Do you keep them all together." :wall: I tried to take the opportunity to give a little advice but I see noting was taken. All they can order at local one is quote "the blue one, the orange baboon one, the horn baboon one, and the pink toe thing." I tried to give her the names or at least a common name but she really loves her job.

Not enough experience to work at Petco? Where exactly do they expect you to start?

I could have gone through with a breeding project if I wanted to, but I only had the idea since it would have been convenient to grab a male and female in one go. My immature male H. longipes is setting down a mat, so maybe I should start thinking in that direction. The Petco I was talking about is the one in Baldwin, by the way.

I'm pretty comfortable saying that it's a true rarity for me to get any male roseas in. I get a few immatures every once in a while (like in the 3" range), but not often. I'm not a big-box store, though, so my stuff usually comes from different suppliers than what they probably use.

I wonder how they manage to order, then. You'd think the breeder would mention names trying to verify what was needed.

My Petco always has their Rosies with like, 80% humidity, and everytime I tell someone that they don't dig the moisture, they just nod their heads, tell me it will be changed, and then nothing ever gets done. I'm pretty close to calling corporate. I've also found sponges in their water bowls several times.

They only really seem to feel like ordering Rosies, too, when they should probably be mixing it up, at least with a smithi for chrissakes.
