Looking around on the internet I stumbled across these rather interesting inverts. Anyone have any? Not too interested in keeping them myself, but they do seem pretty neat.
You dont have to use rain water. I raised some to adulthood(took several tries), but was unable to hatch out the eggs they laid. I gave them bottled water(rain water is not neccesary, and very difficult to come by in the summer). They like the light, and the warmth. A desk lamp works well for that purpose.
Its best to stick to using the food that they give you and only in the right amounts. The will literally eat to death if given the chance(lost two batches to this ).
I bought some at the beginning of this week, haven't set them up in a tank yet though, it's been in the high 80s here lately, and not a whole lot cooler inside., is this too warm for them? I'm eager to set them up, especially since my mom doesn't believe they're real, and thinks it's all a scam.
I used to keep these a few years ago along with sea monkeys(brine shrimp)
I would suggest hatching them in distilled water ( buy a gallon at wal mart for like 69 cents or something I think it went up)
then when they are alittle older and it's time to change the water use spring water (also sold at wal mart for should be the same price)
make sure you keep them warm and with sufficient light. I think the min temp is around in the 80'sF which will cause algea to grow like crazy (they seem to thrive in not so pretty water though, and it's a good thing because they dirty it up quickly)
you can feed them the supplied algea pellets or whatever it is, but once they get full size, you can feed them live mosquito larve (thats cool to watch)
They are amazing creatures not just because of the cryptobiosis, but also because they consist of males and hermaphrodites (male/female, there are no straight up females)
Now I want to find my eggs and raise some more. hmm, now that I think of it, I still have one that died with eggs, that I have kept frozen for about 2 years now...
well, have fun.
