Hey everyone, I just have a question about the web making of Trichonephila clavata, not sure if other members in the genus do this.
I was able to collect two T. clavata recently and am keeping them in my room, they wouldn’t make a web in a large screen enclosure but when allowed to roam my room, both made complete webs in two corners of my room. My question is, what was one of them doing? One of them, beside my bed, would descend down, about 1.5 feet or so on a thread, and then climb back up, dragging the thread with it, and then it would use its legs to push the silk like into place onto an existing thread. It’s connected to one of the borders of the orb, here is a pic of it. Does anyone know why it did this? Is it similar to a stabilimentum in an Argiope web? I know the spiders like Gasteracantha cancriformis put white dashes throughout their webs as well. Does anyone have any knowledge on this?
