Hey all. First post, love this forum, it's been very helpful in the past!

Just a question really. I got a hold of a African Red Trapdoor Spider yesterday and since i've got it home it's not attempted to burrow at all.

I know I might be worrying but i'm concerned over it. How long would it usually take for one to settle and start burrowing? I've never had a trapdoor before.

I've got it housed in a large jar, with about a 7 inch substrate of forrest bedding/cocoa fibre. It's moist but not overly damp or bone dry. I have a bit of moss on top of this too. The jar is about 7 inches in diameter. The temp is about 78-80f and the humidity is about 80.

It's vicious so i'm sure it's well. It attempted to attack me and reared up at the tongs a lot. It just seems to be sitting on the surface at the moment and isn't all that interested in food. I tried it on a cricket and it sort of just reared up and tossed the cricket to the side.

Nice looking beastie, just very angry and very reluctant to burrow :D

Any help at all guys?

hehe

i had that same problem
when i first got my trapdoor

well what i did was already sort of made the whole and coaxed her in there so it would start webbing up and make the door

well if that doesnt work another thing i did was make the hole about 4inches deep but do not make the whole to wide open like small enuff for ehr to get get in there

i used a toilet paper carboard thing and and she walked in there and put the toilet paper cardboard thing right on top of the whole slowly soo she doesnt fall out fast make sure shes facing the whole too ..

and then gently coax her down there and just leave it there for 1 night and it will be done =]!

let me know what happens!

It will take time , mine took about a week and I haven't seen it since.
Sometimes , instead of digging a whole , they cocoon themselves in the moss and debris and kind of stay like that for weeks, even months. But you have nothing to worry about.

What i had to do is make a hole for them to go into and force them down there then leave them alone
