Tips on using dirt for substrate?

I want to create a substrate that has a grayish color to it. Primarily using crushed slate and tan dirt. It's it necessary to quarantine the dirt to rid termites etc.?

You could moisten the substrate and put it in the microwave for a few cycles. This process is called heat treating.

esthetics mean nothing to spiders.
