Want to get a communal group of Phyllocrania paradoxa. I want to know your guys’ thoughts on a communal setup for these guys? Ik a lot of people don’t like the tarantula communals so curious if it’s the same kind of sentiment. I’ve had Indian flower and orchid mantises in the past and have a perfect tank for these guys

They're known to cannibalize. Given enough space and resources, people have kept them together, but not a single person will claim they don't eat each other.

Personally I would never. But if you don't care that one will eventually kill the other, that's your own choice to make.

A "communal" is a set up in which all animals live together happily and in peace. A true communal is like a community fish tank, with several schooling species that live together and generally leave each other alone, or have neutral/positive interactions.

A communal is not 2-6 predators isolated in an enclosure until they eat each other.

Thanks, I at least just wanted to keep a pair together but I get the idea. I just saw that they do well in a communal (relatively speaking) as chances of cannibalism are low for the species

I wouldn't endorse it, but I have seen examples of it working in very, very big terrariums.

I've seen many more examples of it not working though, and that's why I said all this.

Best of luck whatever you decide.

Be very careful, when I tired to breed mine they were both chill with each other in the tub setup I built but when male went in he was decapitated 😢. If you are gonna do it i would recommend 5 gallons every mantis

when they are babies you can be less careful tho. just make sure adults always have food, I think it’s similar requirements to an Asian forest scorpion communal

I'm noticing what makes an enclosure communal for non-social species. It is all about size. Technically you could keep 4-6 OBT's in a single enclosure if it was the size of a house. Even then they have a chance of running into each other and fighting though.

True but I think the difference is, if two orchid mantises ran into each other one would end up getting eaten for sure while I think ghost mantises will kind of just ignore each other, still territorial tho
