What a little cutie--and better trained than my dog, for sure. Thanks for sharing!

That is really awesome! I used to have rats as a kid, and recently acquired a young female by accident. May I ask how young your rat was when you started training it?

I started training her when she was 6 weeks, basically the first week of getting her.

Oh very cool. The rat I have is about 7 weeks so I am definitely going to attempt to train her. I really enjoyed training my chihuahua to do tricks so this should be fun too!

Are they fast learners? How long do you need to train them in order to completely obey you for one trick?

You should look into rat agility contests. Your little sweetie would be great at it!

They are some of the quickest learners, she learned all those tricks in just a week. She is litter trained and is out 24/7. She doesn't chew either, just a well behaved ratty!

Get a rat, you will be surprised on how intelligent they are.

I bet your snakes would enjoy a pet rat :unhappy:.

However, do not under estimate rats.
My good friend had a pet rat that crawled in his corn snakes cage somehow. Let's just say it wasn't a pretty thing to see a rat holding half of a snake in it's mouth.

I will, but currently all the free space is taken by my T's, when i rehome in few months i'll get a pair, maybe even male+female so i can feed their babies to my snakes. Two birds with one stone i'd say

Very impressive, is she the only rat you have? How long did it take until you could trust her to be free roaming? You're not afraid she might chew something that she shouldn't? Or do something dangerous while being curious?

I would guess that if she is your only rat that you are her only companion and therefore the only one that can interact with her. Since rats are social creatures, she is more prone to bonding with you and having a stronger bond then if she had another rat companion in which to become connected with. Not that someone couldn't achieve this level of skill from their rats if they had two, but I would assume it'd be much more difficult.

I also assume lots and lots of interaction and training must be involved to accomplish this.

All speculation of course. Maybe all it takes is the correct technique and patience.

Either way, great work.

I have two rats, both knows the same tricks. Training them was so easy and quick. It took me about a week to teach them all those tricks. To get their trust was simple and fast as well, I just gave them some treats(off my hand). Patience was not really necessary for rats, they were straight forward. What surprises me is how dogs need constant training and need weeks to months of work, while rats just a week.

As far as danger goes, my rats do not chew on anything. I trusted them from day one to free roam my house.

Here was my old rat "Mikey" (R.I.P) he too ran around the house 24/7 and knew tricks.

I wanna know how you potty trained the darn thing...thats impressive.
Rats are naturally clean animals, most rats know where to eliminate(the cage) by themselves. Other just need a little extra help.

Cocoa the rat made a couple mistakes the first and second day. All I did was picked it up and placed it in one corner of the cage. That's all it took, she figured it out. Less than two days and she learned.

This is all very interesting and neat. I'm still working with my rat. She finally trusts me. I think she was still traumatized from almost being snake food. That's how I got her. My snake didn't eat her, so ergo pet rat. She's very sweet, if a bit spastic. But I like her, and am determined to train her. Haha.

My chihuahua learned his tricks in only a couple weeks. Would work on a new trick every 2 days or so. He got it down very quickly.
