If you've got correct ventilation and tank is dry (but not too much) the smell won't be a big problem.

Why they smell

If your hissers were fed oranges primarily they will smell like crap...
Do not feed oranges as a staple, oranges should only be used to aid gestation and promote birth.
If you have a female hisser that looks fat and bloated, feed her an orange peel and within 5 days she will give birth, i have seen this numerous times.
The oranges when digested will evaoprate throughthe shell and when you have a few 100 it will stink to high hell, change there diet and feet them a dry food that is not cat food or dog food try plain cheerios or bread for a few days and that will help get rid of there smell.

Sincerely

I've found that most of the bad smell I used to get from my hissers was from the food I was giving them...not the roaches themselves. Some of the roach buffets are packed with nutrients and other good stuff, but don't smell too wonderful. I would recommend using some sort of grain product that smells good to you. I also feed mine a diet of mainly lettuce, and that seems to keep the smell down as well.

You want a diet that will make them non smelly or something to feed them that doesn't smell too horrible?
For food type stuffs that won't smell too odd go with fresh peas, romain lettuce, carrots, celery, squash, tomatoes, apple bits and dry dog foods (i feed mine the same stuff i feed my old dane). Also, are you taking the left overs out or are they just sitting and rotting? That might be what the smell is. Good luck with your hissers.

The smell isn't really anything compared to the horrible fruit fly outbreak which I get in all my roach containers. This happens because it is warm and humid, so you can't really stop it. Fruit flies everywhere!!

Hisser diet

I have tried the cheerios and oatmeal and wheat bread with very little being eaten. Now the tetra fish flakes are gone within a few hours, so they seem to like that. A slice of an apple and some lettuce they like and an orange peel i can not see any munching going on there. With this diet I do not notice any smell :?

Now i just picked up some cat food for them and was wondering why this might make them smell :? Do people recomend against feeding cat food to them?

In my opinion Cat food is a very bad idea. Every Time I offered my Hissers cat food I ended up with a few fatalities, and as soon as it was removed everything went back to normal. Cat food has too much protein for them. Also lettuce does not have much national value, try collard greens instead.
