Are there any tarantulas native to South Africa? I travel there frequently and the last time I was there I asked a game tracker as well as a friend if there were any tarantulas in South Africa. Neither seemed to think that there were. Of course, both tried to assure me so that I wouldn't be afraid of finding one, to which I replied, "oh that sucks, I was hoping to see one. I have 20 at home and I miss them". And naturally that just freaked them out and the conversation ended there.

But I feel like there must be something there since there is so much biodiversity in South Africa. I will be there in July again and it would be cool to see some tarantulas I knew what to look for. {D

There are Ts in S. Africa, not many of which are in the hobby due to local laws banning the removal of inverts without permits, any that are in the hobby will likely have been illegally removed. Augacephalus, Harpactira, Harpactirella, Ceratogyrus to name just a few.
