Tarantula Cribs Magnets too Strong?

I have a few Tarantula Crib enclosures, and while I like the smaller ones, the magnets on my 18x12x12 seem overly strong. Not sure if anyone has a large model that has some thoughts? I can barely put the lid back on without scaring the crap out of my tarantula. The tab to hold onto it is not very big to and the magnets cause it to slam shut. I have resorted to putting some foam stripping on the lid frame so it will soften the closure up a bit.

Love that the magnets are strong tbh, use TarantulaCribs for my medically significant species.

Edit: if youre worried about it slamming down too hard though, the slide opening ones are a lot less snappy than the purely top opening ones.

I HATE HATE magnets for pet boxes, and pockets on gear bags. It’s the stupidest idea.

I'd imagine these stronger magnets for the larger enclosures make sense, because chances are you're going to put a larger spider like a Theraphosa in there. I've heard stories of Theraphosa pushing magnet lids that aren't strong enough

rare earth magnets are quite handy. Small, powerful and all it requires is for you to cut a circle in the material. Saves time / $ in fabrication but the snap can be un nerving

If I could afford it, I'd put all of my OW in Tcribs because I know for a fact that those magnets are strong. Now, my exos with those flimsy doors that leave a gap and the plexiglass lid at the top with the cheap snaps.... don't inspire the most confidence tbh. Haven't had any issues yet, and they are practical but i wouldn't necessarily call them durable or strong. Whenever I move them i hear cracks lol

I like the sliding lids for my OWs. That way I can control the size of the gap while I refill water or drop food in. Having the lid completely off makes me nervous

I put a layer of electric tape around the perimeter of one of those stupid little house shaped numbers I bought out of pure childish whimsy, because I have the same complaint. Use it for slings, & removing/replacing that damn door was just obnoxiously jarring, & I'm STILL concerned about a freak mishap crushing it .

Sidebar: I work with rare earth magnets in retail display design. My daughter comes home from second grade and says "Hey Dad, I know how to make levitating cars" and gives a pretty good frigging explanation of how MagLev works (impressive for a 7 year old). I am able to add to the discussion because one of my clients is big in the field.
So I say "Okay, let's do the experiment" So I build 2 nail holders out of plex and have 2 nails hooked up to batteries. The nails are touching our makeshift rails. I then used rare earth magnets to represent the train wheels. They stuck to the rails until she hit the power and bang, there it floated. Needless to say she got an A on her Science project and impressed the hell out of me.

It's nice to hear our children are thinking outside the box.
the stronger they are the better.

I am making an enclosure DIY and I'm going to try bra clips from an old bra. I suspect it'll be a nice, firm latch without the snap of magnets or vibration of Velcro, both of which I've heard can irritate the spiders. I'll be using hot glue, so we'll see if it takes. Might be a neat alternative; I'm sure handier people than I could do it in a neater fashion than I will manage, but if I make it work I'll post about it. I feel like the magnets would work better if they were also on a sliding latch: swing it up before pulling the lid up (or out), then replace lid, swing them back into place. This way there'd be no snapping.

I don't know if you guys have heard of herpcult brand enclosures. You may want to check them out. Cheaper, less noisy, and more escape proof. Same thickness and clarity, but they have a secondary locking mechanism so if the magnets were to somehow come loose, your T would need to figure out how to free the lid. There is also a lip on the inside where you free the magnets. It kind of creates a stopping point for your tarantula should they bolt. Instead of just running up and out, they will likely pause at the lip giving you another split second to close the enclosure.

You talking about those little hook things on the back? Don't they require a bit of tension from the elastic/weight of the load to keep shut?

Yup! I'm keeping some elastic on. The plan is to glue them in such a way it'd take a bit of pressure to hook it or unhook it. I imagine something like a thin strip of elastic bandage would work very well for it (think pressure bandages on a sprained wrist). I'm just waiting for the new glue gun to arrive (managed to somehow lose the last one..?) and I'll see how it goes.

Genius idea, I love it... When you're done, you've GOT to post pics, I'm dying to see this one, LoL.
