my tarantula keeps climbing up its cage, I don't know if she's a female or male, I've only had her for a couple of months now, this has never happened before. Everything was normal until today, she tried climbing up every corner of her cage for hours, she's never been this active before. The substrate is wet on one side and dry on the other, that's how it's always been, the water dish is full. The temperature is normal, she ate a couple of days ago. I don't get it.

A geniculata are pretty active. But let the sub fry out. It should not be wet. I kept mine pretty dry,

First thought was it might be a mature male but doesn’t look like it.

Very different species but my (females) T. stirmi does this once in a while. Latches herself to the walls and crawls around for a couple of hours and then calms down and goes back to her hide. T’s are just weird sometimes....

Every once a while, tarantulas say to themselves, isn’t it such a nice weather today? Let’s take a walk. Thus the adventures begin. :angelic:

My A. chalcodes and my B. hamorii climb the walls at least once a day for several hours. Spiders being spiders.

Lately, my B. smithi has been practicing being an arboreal. As long as the cage doesn't have enough height to allow a potentially deadly fall (yours is fine), there's nothing to worry about.

I am so glad to hear someone else T. Strimi is a tweaked at night too. My girl is out every night climbing over everything. I think she is plotting her escape to cut my neck with her fangs. She truly hates me.

She's just starting to explore more. They are quite capable of climbing, all seven of mine are usually on their glass at night (my big ones and small ones alike) and rarely on the ground. Just enjoy that you get to see her being more active and you get to see her moving around; great picture opportunity time :)

SO NO JOKE...I woke up briefly, saw your reply and then fell alseep again and had a crazy dream that my stirmi escaped! She was running up the walls and got on the ceiling fan and jumped down and when I finally caught her she was pushing on the lid of her enclosure with the strength of a small child while I held it closed. Lmao!!

A tarantula that climbs all over the places all the time is not happy. Many people think that they are just exploring. But i think not! The first day after introducing them they may explore and then settling down and finds a good place to dig their burrow. If they are not, and pacing the tanks for a long time, and trying to escape, this means that they are not happy with the enclosure design. It can be something very trivial that we dont see, or understand, like to loose or wrong substrate or that the hide is placed in the wrong way, that are not suitable for the spider. My tip is to redesign the enclisure a deeper substrate, hides and stuff like that placed in another way and so on! I have had tarantulas climbing for days, and when k rearrenged ther terrarium they almost amideatly chanched behavour. We are talking instantly!

She's a genic, so she's probably just trying to escape to your bin of feeder insects. :troll:

!!!!LMAO!!!! I don’t why but I can’t stop laughing at this... Tears in my eyes, belly hurts, hard to even write this because I am laughing so much..

Thank you so much for sharing. Every morning should start this way. Ehh sorry about the dream though. Totally l worth it though. :D

I agree with you 100% on this. Every time one of my T’s is all over the place, I redo their home until they are happy.

It took 5 different attempts at a perfect enclosure for Wierdo my E. murinus to borrow and become the proper pet hole that she is.

She was always on top, in sight, roaming around and never tried to kill me when I opened her enclosure. She just tried to escape.

I don’t even like my T. strimi’s enclosure so I don’t blame her for being mad at me.

I was under the impression humidity doesn't play a big role?
The humidity of the air directly above the substrate does. It's where their booklungs are positioned, which need humidity to properly function. If you wet/moisturize the substrate, this is already there. Some species like/need this more than others, like A.geniculata, Theraphosa species and E.murinus. :)
