I know someone who owns/runs a small pet shop and he buys his Ts for store for cheap. I was wondering if there is any way to find local T breeders and buy directly

Go to a local expo, many vendors are the breeders themselves. There's always at least one local breeder... so long as you expand what 'local' means a bit. In other words, overnight shipping from a few cities away is far cheaper than a few states away. Collect business cards/websites and save them for when you want to order.

He most likely buys a lot and gets them at wholesale prices. @EulersK is right expo's around your area would be the best source to go to for finding dealer(s)/breeder(s) close to you who are going to deal with you directly.

I was just wondering because he said that he goes on trips where he drives to reptile breeders and one T breeder and brings the haul back to his shop

This is one of the benefits of having a vendor/resellers permit/license. ;)
Around 30 years ago I made candles, as a hobby, clientele grew fast. After talking with my main supplier on case pricing, quickly found a vendor license would cut my cost by 60% or more. Profits went through the roof. I quit making since the demand was so large to keep up I would require commercial equipment and paid employee/s. I wasn't going to start a small business at that time, looking back, maybe I should have. I keep the license as most suppliers honor license holders and give substantial price reductions at or very near "wholesale" price. Just an FYI. These pay for themselves in short order, depending on the type you apply for.

Facebook is a good way. Try to join some USA Tarantula groups and ask around to see if there are any in your area. I joined a few UK Tarantula groups and found a bunch of different breeders to purchase from in the future. :)
