we should have a dedicated thread to spider art! i should draw something up too! was a concept artist in the past... but only did preliminary sketches and then passed the work onto the younger crowd to bring it to life for the hollywood heads to approve or disapprove.. i hated that job lol!!! 1. way too political... 2. way too much abuse of work schedule... and 3. way too much verbal abuse from the studio head... I heard my studio was not the only one that practiced these things.... all seem to abuse the first two... but my boss was the "special" one that cussed us out all the time...

now i work for the DA in los angeles... much better! plus... i actually left my art job to fix my marriage and relationship with my kid..

Speaks Volumes about what it is like in the Art World. You prefer working for the DA. As an artist I am dying laughing

Nope.. lol! But hate the abuse... my relationship with my then preteen daughter was falling away.. my marriage sucked too.. i was working in the studio, taking art classes, and assisting in teaching life drawing classes... mon - sat... 14 hours everyday.. the minute my daughter said she felt like i didnt love her.. was when i called it quits. Luckily, my wife works for the DA too.. so she hooked me up with a normal day job.
I chose my kid over my passion. My wife and i fought a lot too cuz of the nature of my job..
But it's all good. I still draw here and there and i love building model kits so im totally good!
Last i heard.. the industry has been changing in not such good ways..
Lots of outsourcing to China. And wages on the decline cuz now everyone wants to be a concept artist..

you made the right call. I work as a graphic designer, illustrator, etc....People think "That must be fun" and they have no idea how much of a grind it is. People comment on Gordon Ramsey's demeanor and I comment "Lightweight if you were in design and production" I read your post and was like 'BTDT'. Yes, industry is changing but talent still gets gigs, but raises are few and far between. You made the right choice and I am glad it is working for you.

Yeah i hear ya.. glad to meet another artist!
It was hard dealing with that scumbag.. actually, my old colleagues have a class action lawsuit against him for unpaid wages and abuse. not sure about the graphic design industry.. im sure it's very similar... but i just hated the politics... if u had the boss's ear.. you'll get all the gigs as long as ur good enough.. had colleague who can outdraw and outpaint any kid/man on the block.. but this new "pretty" girl who was just aite in art.. always got her hands on the best stuff for games and movies over him despite being recognized that he was the best out of us..
But i do agree with ya.. talent will get u far as well... i think it all depends on the studio.. some play fair and others dont..
Anywho, im glad i left... if i stayed then i would of ended up like some of my mentors and friends.. divorced.. and i dont believe in that. The job did make me become an unpleasant person.. wife was always telling me to quit cuz i was changing and not spending time with her and the kid. It was hard.. didnt want to quit even tho it sucked.. but did for them.

Not sure how old u are Penn.. but it was harder for me in the industry cuz i started when i was 33.. already married and had a full grown teen kid..
I did notice the younger guys doing better cuz they worked and went home.. i had to teach at night at an art school, and took classes their to become more marketable. Oh yeah.. goin to school in the beginning when i was 29 was hard and stressful.. i was doing all that at the wrong time in my life.. but if ur young.. GO FOR IT!!!
Dont get discouraged by my rant.. if u have a passion and a talent for it.. which looks like u do.. then try it out if u have no obligations like i did when i started.. it was a losing fight that i knew getting into.. and unfortunately, i paid for it..

Oh.
And about the "grind"... screw it man. Embrace the grind. The grind brings out character! Or maybe Matt Man and i are just crazy hahahahahhahaha!

yeah the politics does exist and favoritism is done over talent many times. But when it comes to messing with the family you made the right call.
I had a GM who was the supreme <edit>, was worthless but spun a good yarn and he actually came after me, Wanted to replace me with one of his guys and had my boss even starting to believe it. He got exposed and let go, he had some comments for me as he was leaving and I said "Typically a smart, talentless, <edit> will hitch their cart to the prize pony and then just claim all their successes" He looked at me and said "You think you're a prize pony?" I looked at him, smiled and said "I'm <edit> Secretariat"
