Talcum powder/fluon as a barrier for arboreals

These substances are used frequently for formiculture (ants), has anyone used them for tarantulas? I have a mid sized pokie I'm keeping in a kritter kage (I know it's not ideal, but it's affordable, and secure) and would like to put a small layer of barrier on top to make feeding and such easier. Thanks.

Interesting, but I think that's a bad idea.
Tarantulas will still try to climb where they can't get good traction, and they will fall. Falls are risky for them.

I Would say its probably safer to just have them set up properly so they are much more likely to retreat and hide than bolt out onto you.

Don't have the opening of the cork bark at the very top of the enclosure, give yourself some space and if she's out and you want to be in, give her a chance to flee by giving the enclosure a tap before you pop the lid. As long as you don't surprise them they will almost always hide rather than come at you

I personally don’t see this stopping a Poecilotheria, if feel like would just step over a barrier at fast speeds.

This won’t work

But a light film of olive oil will

i don’t think it would work - unlike ants something as big and fast as some Poecilotheria species is going to have a lot of momentum which would enable them to shoot right past that barrier (in my estimation) - let alone the possible health effects the powders may have on the T

I'm just curious are you using the smaller lid on top to feed your pokie? That shouldn't disturb your T nearly as much rather than taking the whole top off.

I use Kritter Keepers for my terrestrials and the only excitement I get from feeding them or giving water is from only one. My 5 inch T. vagans loves attacking the water dish, never gets old.

I never used them for arboreals so I really have no clue which is why I'm asking.

What do you use for arboreals? Anything affordable and secure? I know they have those fancy ones at petco but I can't afford that.

I use Exo Terra nano tall which I removed the mesh top and glued in acryllic. They are 8x8x12 and perfect for arboreals up to 5 to 6 inches dls. They are cheap, I paid $30 for mine and look nice. I have one arboreal enclosure from Jamie's Tarantulas 7x7x11 and although very nice they are costly.

The cheapest route is start hitting up $1 general stores and check containers out. Also hobby lobby display cases but you will need some tools like a dremel for drilling vent holes.

I'm old and tired....like always tired....so I always go the easy route. So knowing that, replacing mesh top on exo terras is pretty simple just need knife and glue gun. Also know the difference between 1/8 & 1/4 when buying acryllic sheets. One is easy to cut the other you'll never cut.

I use these until they get to be really good size. Go to a Walmart or similar, buy a $10 soldering iron and some of these and you have amazing aboreal enclosures till they start to get 6"+. Soldering iron is obviously for putting in air holes. Every frugal T owner should have one, then literally anything platic becomes a T enclosure.
