I figured that this new addition to my collection could use some extra weight on her abdomen. So i fed her a live, adult mouse. She seemed to enjoy it:

/Cheers!

A bit of both acutually. She was fed in her transportation box. I figured i might as well give her something to chew on while i was working on her new tank. :)

Ahhh the old feed a mouse thread, i remember a while back i posted something like this and everyone yelled at me for feeding live mice, but i think times have changed. Anyway love the pics, and love the blondi, it looks like she just molted not too long ago.

Times haven't really changed. It's still dangerous to feed an expensive spider a $2 mouse that could injure it. Your choice, though. It could snatch it right up and have no problems. The mouse could live long enough to bite a leg.

I do, however, think that a lot of times this is done more for us than for them (the spiders).

Has anyone ever tried a frozen/thawed mouse?

Well i meant times have changed in the way that people don't care much anymore what you feed your Ts, and they don't mind as much if you post a pic of it. But i am going to start feeding my bigger Ts rat fuzzies, they are about as big as a mouse, but they still are alittle blind so they prolly won't try to bite as much, but yet they still crawl around the cage.

I've fed my T.apophysis a f/t mouse last week. I placed it in front of her burrow and when I checked on her the next morning she was eating it. It took her quite some time to finsih the mosue. I have also fed f/t pinkie mice to my sub-adult P.metallica. It also ate the mouse with gusto.

F/t mouse doesn't work with my male rosea. I tried it twice but on every occasion he backed off when he touched the mouse and stayed in his house until I removed it 24h later. Silly bugger! That was a perfect feast there but he was too picky ;)

I think it has more to do with the fact that most of us that are against feeding live mice to tarantulas have realised there is no point in arguing about it, you will still carry on doing it, so whats the point?

Well why are you against it? is it cause you think its inhumane? or wait a min. i love this one, is it cause it might hurt your T? Well if your going to feed a live mouse to ur T then you should make sure something like that doesn't happen, i know that alot of us that feed live mice to Ts usually stun the mouse so it doesn't bite. I know that there is always the possibility but that is our fault if our T gets hurt, but the keepers guide even shows a mouse as a feeder. It says anything that is less than half the size of the spider is possible prey. And i never realized that it was a FACT that MOST of us are against it, i'm pretty sure its about 50/50.

The only reason I see for feeding an adult mouse instead of throwing in a handful of crickets is for the owner's "enjoyment" of watching the show. A tarantula can survive just fine on crickets alone.

I'm not against feeding mice to Ts, but I feel that it can be done in a safer way (as a pinkie). Seeing the mouse be eaten doesn't bother me, but it does bother me to see an unnecessary risk. I've fed one of my Ts a pinkie, mainly because I was just interested if it would take it.

If the mouse is stunned to the point where it is unable to bite then I see no problem with it. If the mouse is running around the tank, it's dangerous to the T. As with all animals, the mouse's only concern at that point is for its own survival. Feeling threatened, it will be in a defense mode and will likely bite.

I agree becca, but like i said, i do think most of us that feed our Ts mice, stun the mouse before hand. Atleast i do.

And to add on to my last post. I honestly don't think a wild blondi survives on crickets alone, they need a mixture for a good diet.

Today I went out with a BrianS to do some T hunting in our local area (my first time doing so), after flipping over about 30 rocks it was obvious that Ts in this part of the world have quite an array of food choices. Certainly a T. Blondi due to sheer size alone would have a greater variance in their diet, anything from crickets, to roaches, mice, snakes, lizards and probably birds too, after all, it is a Goliath BIRDEATER

The debate on whether to feed or not to feed mice is silly, let people make their choice and deal with the results on their own.

This is true,if you think that taking a chance is worth the risk.
I don't even feed my reptiles live food.
