Darn... I really wanted it to be female. I really love the look of the adult female over a male. I was just reading that site before i came back here and looked at your post. Looks like I am going to have to buy another and hope for a female

thnx

I would lean toward male too, but don't quote me. Or at least if you do, do it in a rag that nobody trusts. Include a nice photo, too.

WHOA, WHOA, WHOA!!!! Shouldn't that be in the watering hole? I've got delicate eyes, with sensibilities to match!

So do the males and females look the same when they are juveniles? because right now she looks like a definate female from the top with the jet black body and orange stripes. Whereas the males are greyer. So if they look the same when they are young then yes this is a male but if the males are grey when they are young then it looks female

thnx

The males get lighter as they mature...I have't raised one from a sling but I have a bunch of babies now so I'm sure I will get at least one male out of the bunch. But from what I hear the final mature molt has the most dramatic color change in a male.

Of course one of the best methods to tell before hand is the one krystal is using above. From what I remember of that method it lookes like a male from your pics.

Well in the picture my suntiger is in premolt. It was the same way before he/she molted last time. After the molt his/her butt was pure black with the orange stripes and after alot of feeding the butt went an orange color just like in the pic. So now his/her butt is all fat from all the crickets that my suntiger ate. And my suntiger is still jet black, no grey at all.

Interestingly enough none of the examples they used show a critter that is COMPLETELY black on the underside. Even the boehmei has some light-colored hairs underneath, but my Alex does not. I just turned her over (the only spider I can do that with), and she is completely black underneath. I imagine if I had a magnifying glass, I could sex her, but certainly not with the naked eye as with some others. (She was sexed before I bought her but I wanted to see for myself using this method that is new to me). :)

Yes, this is true... If your P. irminia is male (from the pic it looks like this :) ), it will change colours for lighter when it matures...

You're not listening.

Most of us are basing the sex determination of your P.irminia on the method explained in detail here:

http://www.birdspiders.com/faq_sex.html

Not on the coloration of the spider. Whether it is in pre-molt has nothing to do with it.

Definite male. Do you see the small almost bald spot right above the furrow? All of the male Psalmopoeus and Poecilotheria I've seen have this.

Kind of a bummer, I know. I bought 2 ornata a few months ago and they both turned out to be male

On a brighter side 3 of my 4 regalis turned out to be female :D

That's a very masculine male. Coloration is an *indicator* of gender with some species but it is by no means definitive. On the other hand, genitalia is a definitive indicator, and the genital slit of that T has nads :)

its not that im not listening, I agree that from the bottom it does look male but i was just checking on the whole coloration thing. I just wanted to know whether males and females differed in color at this stage. It was just an unfortunate surprise for me to here that it turns out to be a male especially when it was sold to me as a female. I am purchasing a 1" Suntiger tomorrow so im really hoping that it will be female. Unfortunately the male will mature and most likely die before the new one will mature and even if it turns out to be female and wont be able to mate them. When my male does mature I will try and find a mate for him.

thank you all and I appreciate all the replies and I am sorry if I sounded like i didnt believe you.

I would go ahead and buy 2 and increase your chances of getting a female. I personally like having 2 of each species anyway because they always have different personality traits. Sometimes one is a complete wuss and the other one is a little monster ;P

if it was sold to you as a female, and you paid for a female, then whoever sold it to you shouldn't mind giving you a replacement female in exchange for the male. if there is no replacement female, then ask for a refund of either the entire purchase price (assuming you give back the spider) or they should give you a refund for the price difference between what you paid and the price of a male p. irminia.

I paid $40 for a 2" and i think it was the same price for a male or female. I was told that it was too hard for them to decide whether it was male or female but it was shipped to me with female on the container. I havent bought any tarantulas from them since as I have found a better dealer. I like the idea of being able to ship it back and get an exchange but I doubt that they would. thank you for the advice but I guess I will just have to deal with having a male. And hope that my next is a female.
