I thought this was kind of weird. I have a small orange tree in a pot. Swallowtail caterpillars are on it and I see them raise their bodies head-first to the sun, every one of them oriented in the same direction. Sorry could only round up two with my camera view. I guess they are avoiding the hot sun on their backs but it looks kind of funny to see all of them doing it. As soon as a cloud moved under the sun, they all went back down again. Picks are kind of blurry, couldn't get my camera to focus on the caterpillars.

lol, no, I still haven't been able to get a positive ID on those things. I grew them from seeds, found the plant in e texas. It has red, honeysuckle looking blooms and the seeds are as big as golf balls ...anybody have any idea what kind of plant it is? I can take a pic of one of them if somebody thinks they can ID it.

I think I'll post a pic of one of them in a diff thread later, people might see the title here and have no interest in looking at the thread. If a post in a new thread, I think it will get more plant people.

Maybe they're reincarnated Aztecs:D

Since other butterfly species use the sun for migratory orientation, perhaps they are "in training" before they eclose. Love the little blue spots on the backside.
