Im in southern california so it gets hot but lil man has shade and water and i try to give him some muddy areas for his DIY sunscreen so im not worried about that part. I was wondering how much cold they can safely tolerate? He has an outdoor pen. I take him inside at night but when i go on trips etc hes the only reptile i have that gets fed daily so id wanna know what temps he can tolerate safely outside so he can be outdoors 24 hours a day for a few days if i do have to go somewhere and i cant get someone to feed him. Im just worried because too cold+Humid sounds like a good mix for a respiratory infection for dry species. Im not worried about raccoons messing with him since hes really good at hiding himself in the tall grass he has and i can put wire mesh over the area where he sleeps just in case yk. Also hes about 2-3 years old and like 6 inches long?

At 6” long I’d keep him indoors when out of town. I wouldn’t trust raccoons to leave him alone no matter what you wrote above. Raccoons are very tenacious and clever!! I’ve seen them tear apart an entire kitchen.

This is the most commonly kept large tortoise. You’ll find tons of info if you search, there are excellent tortoise breeders that can be contacted too

Contact expert tortoise breeders- that’s what I did for my 4 legged friends.

If you’re really worried that nighttime temps will get too low while you’re away, you can make him an outdoor heat box. I know of several people who keep/kept their torts outside full time this way in SoCal.
