I went on my first collecting trip and we found a lot. Besides these t's I got a few unidentified 2" scorpions and saw a few 3 inchers. We also got a few other t's and saw many more which we left alone.

Here is my new breeding trio.

Female 1

Female 2

And the mature male

Awsome t`s ! i read in the tarantula keepers guide that it is best to take no more than one or two from the wild you know to not dwindle the species,Or something like that.
Great looking t`s you got from your first trip and congrats!:D

What handsome fuzzies! I like their stocky looks - very utilitarian and solid. The Clydesdale of Ts. :)

I bet they will produce cute spiderlings! Congrats!

Where did you go looking for these?

There are so many unidentified Aphonopelmas, but the second pic reminds me of an A. chalcodes.

I TOTALLY wanted to get with you guys for that on Saturday, but I had to work... :(

PM me with contact info for the group you went with please. Was it the Central Clifornia Tarantula Society? I need to get in touch with them but haven't been able to find any current contact listings or ways to get in touch with them. A few years ago Judy told me the club had dwindled to like 7 members and they were meeting at someones house once a month, but there used to be a lot more and we all met at the university bak around '97.

Do you know when the next meet is? I'm REALLY hoping to get in on it.

So how do you know they are all the same species?

Because it's CA and they all came from the same area. The pics make them look different because of the lighting.

Kelly. Did you ever get my last e-mail?

They are all Aphonopelma Iodius, the only species that I've seen in the Central Valley. The males look a bit different from the females but definately the same species.

A few years back, someone told me that there were possibly several species of Aphenopelma around here. She's an entomologist and works for either the county or state (don't recall which) and was one of the higher ups in the Central California Tarantula society. Did someone confirm that there is only one species since then? She told me this when I was talking to her about breeding a local female someone had given me. She also told me at that time no one had successfully bred them in captivity. Has this also changed?

if you guys are interested, there is another group that is in the central/northern/bay area of california (San Francisco Bay Area Tarantula Group) ask Scott about it he is a co-moderator. I was not able to make it to Scott's this year, I went last year and had lots of fun.

Ed, this is the same group. I gave Scott my scorp so he could have 2 for ID. They are not the usual small Bark scorps for sure.
