i ask because i have recently started handling our very docile A. Avic, 'Slut Face'.

Is it basically unheard of for these guys to bite, or is it more common than i would think from her demeanor.

if she felt like she was going to fall would she use her fangs to catch herself?

anyone actually been tagged by one of these guys?

There is this section called "Bite Reports" near the bottom of the forum...
There aren't any A. avicularia bite reports there(that I could see), but there are some for a couple other Avicularia species. Of course any tarantula can bite you, some are just more predisposed to than others.:)

edit- Thanks Teal, I stand corrected. I thought that first one was for a A. versicolor.

:)

I actually thought there would be more reports instead of just the handful... but some is better than none, I suppose hehe

Yep every Tarantula bites, it's just that some are more "tolerant" than others.

Does a hobby horse have a wooden.... Wait! What? LoL! :D

If your avic never bites anything.. You might be able to cuddle with it at night..

As stated, Avics tend to be a very tolerant species. Yes, they will readily use their fangs to catch themselves if they are frightened and falling from your hand/arm whatever. I've had it happen twice (even though my bed was not very far for a fall, and my other hand was right under her to catch her). It doesn't go very deep, and it's barely a scratch. You probably wont even notice it until you see two small pricks on your skin. Avics are so very tolerant, that even in the wild, they find themselves migrating into huts/homes of people, because prey is more readily available there: Kissing bugs, etc that feed from people. Therefore, as a species, they have had a LOT of human contact. That's not to say every avic will be this way.. I've seen an Avic at a store that makes my P. Lugardi look like an angel.. And my P. Pederseni that thinks it's a G. Rosea. Just be careful with her, and so long as she's not poopshootin' or rubbing against you a lot, you should be fine :)

PS: Another thing to be wary about is how they are jumping. If they are trying to jump off of you a lot, they're definately trying to get away from you.. Basically taking their chances either to survive the fall and fun away, or die on impact. In the wild, many Avic species will web in tree branches atop of running water.. if they feel threatened, they will jump or drop into the water.. taking their chances to either escape or die.

Hahaha, Redneck... funny you should say that! That has happened many a times with my 6"+ Female Avic Metallica. I've fallen asleep with her on my chest as I lay down watching a movie. I woke up one morning wondering WTF was going on.. She was 'pawing' at my chin with her front legs. I pretty much leave her cage open at all times when I'm home. I've never seen her leave it, but I have seen her half in and half out starring at me until I pick her up. It makes me sad that right now I am far from home working.. but I have someone watching over all mine and my roomate's T's for a month and 1/2. He checked in on them the other day and said they're all doing great.. I miss them!
