Saw a juvenile male B. emilia at a pet store with numerous, bizarre looking growths on his abdomen. I've never seen anything like this before and was wondering just out of curiosity if anyone has ever seen something similar. The picture is not the best quality, but it's the best I could get. He was walking around the enclosure and the growths didn't seem to bother him from what I could tell. Just really strange. No other animals were visibly affected. IMG_20230708_124200362_HDR~2.jpg

Yeah I’ve never seen that many ever on one spider , definitely cysts. :(
Neither have I. It's hard to tell from the photo, but they were protruding outwards pretty far too, almost like warts/tumors. I've done some reading but haven't been able to find out much about what could cause something like this. It looked very, very strange in person.

Yeah I’d be shocked too because you probably can’t tell until you buy it . I tried to save a t with cysts once unsuccessfully but maybe 🤔 you could have better luck ? Seems to be a lot of them though probably not working in your Favor . I don’t know if any members have suggestions ? Guess you’ll wait and see .. 🫠

He's not actually mine, I saw him at a pet store. I noticed these growths though and I'm really interested in why they happen and what causes them. Parasites? Infection? Cancer?Injury? There's so much we don't know. I wish there were more resources out there.

Yeah I just assumed you bought it already, that’s a Good question 🙋.. unfortunately you gotta follow the dollar 💵 and vets can seem too help just about everything except inverts .. so we’re in the territory of the great unknown. With all the science I used to be interested in and judging by the obvious , these animals are very complex. Despite being a very old species … and not having the advanced visuals jumpers have. They are hated by many , thanks to pop culture and loved by many who keep them .

That’s pretty crazy - never seen a pic with so many. Usually just one, even with my own Ts, only one per animal
I wouldn’t buy that one no way

Dang it. I've been looking for an hour and I can't find the thread I saw the other day about T cancer, cysts, and random other nodes.

Maybe someone who knows what I'm referring to has it bookmarked? I haven't been able to find it via search. It is a very old thread.

Appears to be ectodermal naevi, an overgrowth of keratinocyte, which is common in most animals. Not considered problematic. A biopsy is required to determine for certain. A 1mm sample of the tissue usually all that is required. Since naevi have no neurons they can easily be removed without causing distress or stress.

(I had a doc whack away at my numerous naevi while standing in the aisle in an ER. His pathologist buddy considered me an pristine example of certain genetics.)

Just thinking out loud, but do similar things occur in arthropods whose exoskeletons are made of chitin rather than keratin? I've definitely seen nevi on mammals and other animals but not on inverts. Just curious.
