Strange chrysalis from Oakhurst CA

My aunt found this attached to a potato plant and had brought it to me, I have no idea what it is or if it is alive still. Would be cool to know and if it doesn't hatch within a month or so I might dissect it depending on it's life cycle and what it is.

Sphinx moth of some sort, they are typically found underground so if this was above ground, attached to a plant something is amiss.
