I found this little dude hanging out ontop of the compost heap in the cold and wet , once I got a better look I noticed he was not only all twisted up but he had his head upside-down and he wasn't moving.

So I touched him gently with a blade of grass and he moved but his movement was extremely slow and he seemed to be just moving half of his body from side to side and again extras slow.
I have never really payed attention to centipedes before but he was bright orange I couldn't miss him and something made me get a sling pot put some garden sub in then him. He just sat laid on the sub for about an hour but in the last 30 mins he has started moving about exploring the sub but he still isn't as fast moving as I would expect for a centipede.
My questions are;

1. Is he stigmatogaster subterranea like I think?

2. Why is he so slow?

3. If he is subterranea Why was he ontop of the heep a good 2 ft off the ground instead of in the sub where he belongs?

4. If there is something wrong and that's why he isn't moving fast or running away from me is there anything I can do to help?

Thankyou in advance
More pics incase they help id him 🤷🏻‍♀️

Definitely a Geophilomorpha species, but I cannot ID further. Stigmatogaster, or Haplophilus subterraneus is the most common species in that order in the UK, so it seems likely.

Thank you 😊 would you have any idea why he keeps hanging his head upside down? It's like he bends backwards and stops there upside-down I am not quite sure what it's about.

No idea, sorry. I don't have much experience with centipedes and their behavior. AFAIR I had found some Geophilomorpha specimens before (in a compost prism) and they were definitely slower than for example Lithobius species.

Interesting, at least I know his slowness probably isn't to do with the hanging upside-down thing. It's strange reminds me of the spider morph in pythons when he does it although I haven't seen him do it today. Wonder if he was just cold yesterday and that caused the strange behaviour 🤔
Thanks zsiciarz 😊
