At one time Steve and company was alerted to a croc needing rescuing. The croc was kept in a concrete pit. Steve conjectured it was going to be slaughtered for it's skin. It had been in the enclosure for a very extended period of time and needed extended medical care. They successfully captured it and took it to Australia Zoo, end disposition of the animal undetermined. I think is was returned to the wild.
Salient. The animal was huge. I believe estimated at close to 18 feet. There was some debate among Steve, Wes and others as to what to do with the animal. Then all info on this scenario seems to have vanished and I cannot find the video..
I have written Wes Mannion, and Terri Irwin in the past inquiring about that rescue and the final disposition of the animal but have not received a reply.

Does anyone have any info regarding this animal? Perhaps where one might inquire about it?

I haven’t heard of it’s whereabouts. I remember the episode though. Odd that it seems to just have disappeared though...

This is just a small niggling irritation of mine. I suspect litigation was involved. and possibly censorship, self imposed or court ordered. It was most certainly, and quite obviously, a case of severe and deliberate animal abuse.
If it is being stonewalled, I'd like to know why. If Australia Zoo can be muzzled, this does not bode well for animal rights and conservancy the world over.

My intention is to identify the video and animal involved as well as possible. Then I have an attorney who will write both Wes Mannion and Terri Irwin a letter headed registered letter making an inquiry that affords either of them, who were both present in the capture, the opportunity to reveal information by avoiding revealing information. All very carefully worded and polite, of course.

I could be completely wrong here, and thinking of another croc. But wasnt that the one that was released, then later found poached?

Not sure if this is the exact croc, but the situation sounds familiar with crocs kept in horrible conditions and stuff like that.
NOT the rescue I'm trying to find out about but... ! Thank you very much for that post!!

Backgrounder. I've tried to keep up with Steve Irwin's rescue efforts. Not the dramatized videos but the behind the scenes. I had a very extensive collection of videos of both him, his father, Wes Mannion and their intents and operations, His father was what made the whole operation tick which Steve inherited. Steve was very highly detail oriented, a nuts and bolts kind of guy. The reason why the operations as seen in videos worked so well. Steve and Wes were coordinators of a fine tuned well oiled machine. No haphazard jump in and wing it stuff. (Unfortunately all my info went south with a hard drive crash. I had about an hour of footage interviews of Steve's dad who explained and demonstrated how Steve was trained and where he was coming from.)

So obviously, the croc rescue in the giant concrete enclosure was a very similar operation to that link you gave and there should be similar operational details. Instead, I'm finding a black hole. antithetical to what Steve, Wes and Australia Zoo normally undertakes and documents.

BTW! Can anyone direct me towards the video interview of Steve Irwins father? It started with "Steve was a monster."

@schmiggle Thanks! That came in along with some additional information. Or I should say lack of info. Confusing-> Litigation. Property rights. Animal Planet. Infighting at Aus Zoo. Videos pulled from shelves. Aus Gov has got involved. Land ownership issues. Sounds like a huge ball of dirt and some serious sweeping under rugs.
One used copy of the DVD, Volume 1 on Amazon for $100. Odd. There were three volumes. No mention anywhere of the other two.

Found a book published by his father. Just wonderful $18.95 plus $42 shipping to Thailand. Hrrm.

Thanks much! A perfectly harmless video.
I've got some of the low down on this entire thing. Enough to gag maggots. Sum it all up. Proprietary rights, Animal Planet https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_Planet , Discovery, Inc https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discovery,_Inc., pay per view, etc etc ad nauseum. all tied up in years of litigation, rights infringement and the list goes on.
What I did discover is ALL the Steve Irwin videos that appeared on Youtube and any other media out there were pirated. It gets a lot murkier in that Steve, his family and Australia zoo had no say or control over their videos. Satellite broadcasting muddied the already murky waters. Nuff said.
The best of intents buried under a deluge of corporate profiteering.

I managed to come across a sort of anthology which speaks for itself. An original video pirated from Animal Planet at 1040P HD, a 720P version, a 480P version, a 360P version and a 240P version.

I've often heard people slate Steve Irwin and say his rescue/rehibiltation videos are all for show. Did he actually contribute to a lot of animal welfare? I always used to watch him as a kid and hoped his bonkers personality was a bonus! 😂

Whilst he was definitely over the top he absolutely got the plight/life of wildlife in the spotlight.

Let's sum this all up, hopefully, and put the debates and disputes to rest.
I visited Australia Zoo in 1991, before all the publicity. At that time I was involved in Earth First! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_First! trying to save the last virgin stands of the coastal redwoods. I approached all this from the standpoint of an academic, not a radical protester. I had contact with the Audubon Society, Greenpeace, Sea Shepherd, Surfrider Foundation and a host of others. I went through the extensive information collected by EPIC, Environmental Protection and Information Center and NEC, Northcoast Environmental Center, even becoming a contributing documenter. Sum up, I had done extensive homework in environmental protection endeavors and corporate profiteering. I chose to assist Earth First! as they were directly involved on an individual level without any agenda aside from preserving the last 3% of the redwood forests and the animal species therein.

I was given free rein of Australia Zoo that afternoon, met some volunteers and inspected everything. I have a friend who was working at San Diego zoo at that time and had been his guest there on three occasions. SD Zoo being an upstanding example of animal care comes first. I have also been a member of the the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust, had visited their facilities once, and corresponded with them for about 8 years. https://www.durrell.org/wildlife/
What I saw at Australia Zoo impressed me. As good as S.D. Zoo or better and the same intents and passions as Gerald Durrell had instilled in his efforts.

Since that time I had kept up with Steve Irwin and Australia Zoo's efforts, even being given several video out takes, and had become friends with a couple of volunteers there. So to sum up, Steve Irwin, Australia Zoo, his family, the volunteers and all their conservation efforts have appeared to me to be entirely genuine and sincere. Probably what convinced me most was emails exchanged with one volunteer where she was moaning about being ran ragged. When Steve was present at the zoo it turned into a 'high tension arena'. Steve was driven, normally put in over 12 hours a day and was anywhere and everywhere, constantly hyper and restless. He was also a micro-manager and if something wasn't done the way he thought it should be done he would dive in and do it himself. He led by example and if you couldn't keep up just make a point to stay out of his way and help where you can.

So, was Steve and his videos for real? If they weren't it would be the failing that they were toned down. Steve was a risk taker, and apparently did a lot of things that had people shaking their heads over. He made up for this by being meticulous which probably kept him from being maimed on numerous additional occasions. If him and his efforts weren't genuine, I certainly have never smelled any rats in the soup.

Thanks for the detailed response. Sounds like you've had an eventful life regarding animal welfare and environment.
I always felt he had the best intentions in what he did and took some unbelievable risks. I guess his personality was as large as his efforts for conservation.
Correct me if I'm wrong but you live in Thailand right? Do you conduct the same sort of work/research over there? I ask because my brother had a house over there and a gf for a while (don't ask me where, we're not that close and big age gap!) They attempted to set up an animal sanctuary. They had about 10 dogs, a few cats and some turtles I think. My brother said sanctuary's are few and far between over there... One of their neighbours actually poisoned one of their dogs and killed it, think it had been on their land or something. Anyway I was just curious to know if you were doing something similar! I'm sure I remember reading that you'd adopted some cats or something!?...
