Do these spiders really exist? LOL (jk) I've wanted one of these for a bit now and seem to only see them as one of the care sheets of pet bugs... They seem very appealing. A harmless and calm widow sounds good to me. Well if anyone can point me in the right direction I'm stumped. Also if any of you have have cared for these little critters tell us how its going. Thanks in advance

I'd like to know, too. My roommate for the fall isn't sure about big, beautiful tarantulas, but who could object to this little beauty?

hi, this spider really exists, I got some spiderlings here atm. Got some spiderlings a year ago, and managed to raise them all. 7 females and 2 males. I mated them and they built so many eggsacs that I had to donate the spiderlings...if you look at the Latrodectus pic thread You´ll find some photos of my Steatoda. I´m going to get some Steatoda triangulosa soon, these should be even more calm than S. paykulliana...

Widows, while not harmless, are pretty calm for me...even handleable....

me too

they really aren't inclined to bite unless you give them a pretty good reason

of course a sneeze might be a good reason if they have an egg sac

i wish i hadn't lost *those* pics.

oh well, only thing to do is take some more :)

dont get me wrong...I dont juggle the things but I think people see them as seriously agressive killing machines...Outside thier webs they are quite awkward ..>Now if there is an eggsac....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LoL' No no no I got you tony sorry about that bud. I guess I was just worried more about possible escape possibilites . I thought I heard from a guy down here that keeps them that they were pretty good at moving out with out notice. Not to sure though

Adults shouldnt escape easily in a normal type container..its the babies I hear that can teleport through solid glass... ;)
The babies are quite small and I guess some people over estimate the hole sizes on containers and they get out...I love my reds !

hi, I never had any problems with escaping spiderlings of S. paykulliana. I keep the females in plastictanks (20 X 20 X 20 cm), with some dry branches . That´s it. You can keep them just like Latrodectus mactans or tredecimguttatus, they´re very easy to keep...

hi, here in germany you an get them sometimes, but not in local petstores. I´ve never seen a widow in a petstore. I got mine from a friend, whose friend went to spain for summervacation and brought some females with him. As they´re growing very fast I raised by 9 Spiderlings in half a year to adulthood and mated all my 7 females. You can imagine how many eggsacs I had. After raising 2 complete eggsacs I decided not to seperate the spiderlings, so from every following eggsac only one big spiderling survived. A friend of mine has three complete eggsacs and the spiderlings are about 5mm at the moment (atm ;) ).

@Spike: I wrote you a PM...I´m going to ask my friend soon.
