Including the pinchers he's about 1.75" strong little guy, though.

We used to catch those as kids. The other one that was similar that I loved finding was the Rhonicerous Beetles. Looked like a stag beetle in many ways but with a giant horn.

Not long, I would imagine. 3 weeks maybe? They stay as grubs for several years before becoming beetles.

Psudolucanus placidus is that beetle's name. ( if anyone really cares;) )it is one of two species of "pinch bug" in the US... Psudolucanus capreolus is the northern species and lacks the little gold line of fine hair between the pronotium and elytra... it is also usually darker.

If you feed him real maple syrup he may live a few months or so. Wild-caught always have an uncertain life though.

The photo is Pseudolucanus capreolus, not P.mazama. P.mazama is nearly black, satiny not shiny, and is not found in Alabama. Here's comparison pics and info for both species: http://www.angelfire.com/oh2/USInsects
There's a third species in the United States called P. placidus but it's much harder to find than the other two.

Scavenger, what species of rhino beetle is that in your avatar?

I used to live in Japan when I was little and every year when the season came, we would buy a few of those for like 1000 yen a piece.

awsome bugs, have longed for them ever since.

Trypoxylus dichotomus from japan is the species. PM me if you want some as I will have lots of ova in a month or so.
