i use a canon 300d, with the kit lens (18-55 ef-s) reversed on a custom made adapter. it works as well as any setup i have ever tried, including canon's mpe-65 dedicated macro lens (which is supposedly the best you can get)...

i highly recomend this setup, if anyone is interested let me know and i'll post a thread on what it is and how it works. nothing can come close in terms of price and mag-range. cost me about NZ$150 and goes from life size to 5x life size... and is bright and compact!

@aaronbeck

Thank you for this description. I am working with Nikon D50 and a 105mm macro-lens. My flash is Sunpak Auto DX 12R Ring light.

For smaller subjects I use aditional the Kenko Extension Tube Set (68mm). So i reach 3x life size.

My pictures are ok, but it seems to me, that yours have the better quality.
Some examples of my pictures can be found here:

Hello,
I saw your posting about your photograph collection and wanted to hear more about it. I produce a documentary series for the History Channel called Cities of the Underworld. We are working on a piece for our website where our host, Don Wildman, visits the Notebaert Nature Museum to learn more about spiders. I am looking for any cool photographs of Brown Recluse & Black Widow spiders to include in the piece. If you have any images in your collection I would love to speak with you about them.

Best,

Stefanie

Awesome pics, I'm a NZer also am I'm quite interested in
the kit lens (18-55 ef-s) reversed on a custom made adapter.
Could you please explain this a bit further?

Also have you photographed any NZ spiders? I have seen huntsmans which are quite impressive when they are big (although not native).

I agree about the clarity of the images, spectacular. :drool:
