I have never seen anything like this and no one around here can ID it.. It prefers to come out at night and LOVES to scare the crap out of me. We found the first one about a year ago, and the last couple of months it has invaded (literally) my yard. I find them in the trees, in our dog runs and around the birds. The only web I have found is a real small web around a barrel otherwise I never see them. I ALWAYS find a baby first then within seconds the momma is right there.

The one in the pic is about 5".

I think the thing that freaks me out the most is the eye / head is shiny enough to see a reflection in it.

I mainly need to know if they are poisonous to humans and animals.

Thank you

Sounds like Olios species. We'll need pictures of the eyes to be sure.

Would you be wanting to send a few here to Iowa?

I'll pay you shipping :)

I want one! {D I've read they're not prone to being defensive. Has anyone had any experience with crab spiders?

my brother caught me a couple of olios from central california

they were not too hard to care for, but i was stupid in the caging and destroyed not one but *two* eggsacs! (here is a clue... set the cage up to make it impossible for them to build into the lid if it is a screw top!)

Send it?? Is it poisonous??
to my knowledge there is no spiders that are poisonous, but to the best of my knowledge ALL spiders are venomous to some degree or another. There are very few in the USA that are a serious threat however. Brown recluse pops to mind and black widow. Black widows i dont think have killed any otherwise healthy adults tho.
some bites can hurt and cause swelling from the others but generally are not a medicaly signficant problem. Keep in mind tho that some people may be especially suciptable to the venom and have reactions that are out of the ordinary.
generally speaking i dont worry about any native spiders in the USA , the ones that can really harm you generally dont want to be close enough to harm you lol

spiders of the family Uloboridae are not venomous.

My daughter caught one of these on the ceiling in her kitchen. She lives in Morongo Valley, a little south of Yucca Valley. With this posts and looking them up on Google, we've decided thats what it is thanks to your all's help.
She's been feeding it had been planning on sending it to me. She also saw these there in Yucaipa near Redlands, CA when she lived there. She says that when it attacks and eats its prey, it just tears it apart and there are only little fragments left. Sounds like an interesting spider for sure.
