What are these spiders called? Does anyone know how poisonous they are because I believe they are quite common in southern california.

look up Aranea, Argiope genus
possibly from there

maybe Neoscona genus

cool spiders though, i've kept similar guys and had them make very elaborate webs in captivity. they make really cool like, adapted orb patterns when the space doesn't let them build a big regular one :)

Definitely not Argiope species. Araneus sp. look very much like that but I don't like saying anything for sure simply based on pictures and my lack of expertise.

I also believe it is *probably* in the genus Araneus, but since there's more than 1,500 members of the genus I wouldn't guess beyond that!
