Hi,

Just a question on Sphagnum Peat Moss and Roach Molt. Are they poisonous?

The reason why I'm asking is that my avic just died. Before I bought it, I already know of the risk regarding SADS. I spent a lot of time reading about it. And for the past hour or so, re-reading about it. But no one mentioned about puking/regurgitating avics before they die. And that's the reason why I created this thread. My avic sling suffered for sure. Most area of the lid is brown(it was clean last night). I saw it this morning and I thought it was just 'saving' food as there's a brown liquid circle on its mouth. But now I think that was puke or it was regurgitating.

Back to the question. And I know it's my fault. I left the roach there for about a week. Since my avic is on top of the container, I thought the roach can never harm it even if it's molting. About a few days ago, I found the roach eating its own molted skin. Maybe it also ate some of the peat moss that I placed in the cage? My sling was find until it ate the roach. It ate the roach last night, started puking this morning and I found it dead tonight when I got home.

So... could the molted skin be the reason for puking? Could it be that the roach was hungry enough to eat some of the peat moss? Is it even possible for a roach to be poisoned, did not die from it and passed the poison to the sling that was eating it? Or could it be simply SADS?

I'm lost... T_T

What type of roaches do you feed your T? I have seen a dubia eating the moss in one of my enclosures. The roach was eaten shortly there after with no ill effect on my T.

Blatta lateralis. Hmm... If that is the case, then it could be just SADS. :(
