Some of my retics came out for a stroll.

Had a bit of cage cleaning to do so I thought I'd snap a few pics.
First, my male Jamp. He's been right around this size for 2-3 years now. I don't think he's going to get much larger!

Here is my strange little girl.

This is one of the last pics. This "pose" of hers was more of a "get ready" position. She proceeded to strike a few times.....then she got over it and I was able to walk right over and pick her up. She used to be a beast. Only recently (after over 2 years) has she calmed down. Now her strikes are these half hearted attempts. Then she's chill again.

He's small even for a jamp. He's only about 8 feet. He was imported a few years back as a juvie. He grew to 8 feet and this is the third year he's been mature and producing plugs. I need a lady Jamp for him as my other girls are reserved for other projects!

Where did you get that strange girl?
She was a very small and very sick import that was being offered by LLLReptile at a show a few years back. While at the show, my buddy came up to me and told me of a sick looking retic that was "missing" the reticulated pattern and all the spotting down the sides. LLL said it was CB, but the problems she had were not those typical of CB babies. She started off looking so much like a sunfire retic that I had other breeders congratulating me on my WC sunfire....then she changed colors....twice. Now she looks like this. I hope she takes this year. I'm curious to see if there is much of a genetic component to this color/pattern.

what are you breeding her to?

Hopefully not the jamp. Not being mean.. but trying to prove something like that out with crossing it into a dwarf line probably wouldnt be the best idea. Some times they can throw weird stuff... plus I'm personally not a big fan of dwarf crosses.

From what I see... she looks more like a platinum than a sunfire now anyway if you say shes changed. Very nice though.

Of course not the Jamp! He's being saved for when I can find a small Jamp girl. (Know of any?) I will probably put her with my albino tiger this year.

She's on the small side, but she should be old enough to cycle this year. We'll see.

Got a really nice normal would be easier to prove out with than an albino tiger. =P

I saw a male platinum for sale should try that

My problem with trying a platinum is that I don't want any other genes that look similar muddying up the process. The albino father obviously won't be adding anything in terms of melanin production which is a plus. The only downside being half the babies on average will show the tiger mutation and that may skew the results if this does turn out to be genetic. On the other hand, most morphs seem to show in the tiger phase as well. A normal wouldn't be a bad idea, but I don't have a normal right now and since retics aren't a huge priority, I don't think I want to add more than a female Jamp to our collection. I'm still under the impression that she's just a pretty normal so I'm not too worried about it.

Typically it is about 3-4 years before most will try breeding them. Some argue that it is determined by size so they recommend waiting until she's over 12 feet (which can take as little as 18 months if you go crazy with the feedings).

You can do that if you want your snake to become obese and die at a young age....

Yea I just have a normal high silver male a purple albino and a het albino.

What I really want is a platinum, anthrax and caramel albino.

Would it still be bad if I only powerfed for the first 10 months of its life and then went back to a normal feeding schedule?

The effects of power feeding are still highly debated. Typically wild retics take a few years to mature, so it seems best to error on the side of caution. You can have a male breeding by 1 year of age, but it may have detrimental effects down the road. Is it worth the risk until we know better?

I guess I'll wait then, but 4 years? :(

Genetics play a big part in it too.. I've seen some retics hit 12 foot in a year and dont look power fed at all.

But you should just go sleep and let them grow at their own pace feeding about as big around as they are or maybe alittle bigger every week.
