Solifugids have naturally short life spans, a year or less TOTAL for most species, although there could be longer-lived ones. In captivity, they are very high stress and do not often survive long after capture. Increased hiding areas may help. A few US species have been bred in captivity, but not often and usually in a lab setting.

I second Wade's notion. Solifugids have a life-span of about a year. In captivity, I will give it two weeks to live (maximum amount of time) for the average person. So if you get one, dig the grave early, or have a preservation method before you get it.

I think people make the mistake of assuming they need lots of open areas to run, but they actually seem to do better if the cage is litterally filled with hiding areas. I usually just have the surface covered with chunks of cork bark. I've managed to keep NA species alive at least until the end of their normal life span.

I remember one day my brother called me up and told me he saw a Solifugid in a nearby pet store. I went nuts, the place was already closed though. I skipped college the next day and sat outside the store for 2 hours previous to it opening. I figured that if any other Arachnophile saw it, he would be there early too. The store opened, I went in, and the bloody thing was upside down and dead. I was pissed. It was cramped in a 1 gallon tank with no hiding spaces and a temperature of about 70 degrees. Damn them. It was a big one too. It was a good 5 or 6 inches - biggest one I have ever seen.

live about 1 year on average! maybe more ive found !!!

keep them in desert setup with plenty of space/rocks/hides loadsa food !!!

keep the tank clean from old carcasas !!!

one thing i do with my solifugids is pour water over one side of tank then leave to dry out for them to burrow (i do this once a fortnite) it keeps em busy !!!

im not totally sure which lives the longest male or female id imagine female though, but sexing them is hard from what i gather :? !!!

Fortnight means 2 weeks. You need to warn the Americans Stevo, they are not used to the "etherworldly" english. Ha Ha.

Solifugids like it hot, 100+ f. They are also a lot like shrews, they need to feed almost constantly, or they will starve. It is their overdriven metabolisms that cause them to live so short. Year tops really, though getting one from the pet store and not from an egg and you might get a few months out of it you might get a few days.

Lessee , I've had one egyptian banded solfugid for about nine months now. She is kept 90 degrees, fed daily and has a moisture gradient under the soil. Fascinating creatures.
