My daughter had the flu over the weekend and we reached that critical point where she was too sick to stray far from a bathroom and yet she really needed electrolytes and crackers, but we had run through our supply. So, she and I talked (she's 7.5) and she said that she'd be fine if I ran to the grocery store across the street and back. I reminded her of the rules even though, at that point, she was convalescing and watching cartoons and I told her that Aslan, our Bouvier, would protect her until I got back.
There and back in less than 20 minutes and when my key hit the lock, there was a roar from the other side of the door that would have put a bear to shame, and there was Aslan when the door opened, all up on his hind legs, teeth showing, ready to go until he saw who was there.
Miranda's eyes were huge when I got upstairs and I said, "See, I told you he'd protect you." She said that the entire time I'd been gone, he'd been on the bed next to her and that he'd bolted down the stairs the minute he heard noise.
It's nice to know that your dog will do what it was bred and brought up to do.
