Moose, Nice bug :D It's an Ailanthus webworm moth. Tiny, but brightly patterned. Not sure if they're introduced or native at present.

Cheers,

Terry

Vagrants in general.

Moose, They're really common on Boneset for a few weeks in August or early September here. Didn't know they were native to Costa Rica although we get quite a few leps in nw La in fall that probably originate from s Texas or farther south such as white-tipped black moth, large orange sulphur, orange -barred sulphur, ceraunus blue, mexican yellow, queen, texan crescent + others along with several skippers. In the past several years we've lucked up on a few specialties such as white-angled sulphur, lyside sulphur, and common mestra. Keep your eyes peeled as many of these wackos seem to show up a day or two after good sw winds- occasionally a good bird will show as well! There are quite a few interesting things that make it all the way to Canada nearly every single year!

Heads up :D

Yponomeutidae....their spread is thought to be in part to the spread of the Tree-of-Heaven (Ailanthus altissima). Ailanthus is an invasive species ffrom China, now found throughout the U.S.
