So I was hunting for rabbit the other day(didn't get any :(), and we saw these little flea-like creatures hopping all over the snow. We wondered what they were, as we could clearly see they weren't fleas. They squished really easy. Man they were all over though, It was a gorgeous sunny day.
We were calling them snow fleas. Well I googled "snow flea", and Ha! I guess they are a type of springtail. I thought it was interesting, and thought others might find it interesting.
Anybody else ever run into these? I wonder if you could use these in a tank...

Snow Fleas is a common name that is given to both a Collembola species and a boreid (type of scorpionfly Order: Mecoptera). Around here snow fleas are the boreids. They come out about this time of year. We go out to find them when we hear about "little grains of pepper" running across a trail. Kind of cool to see an insect cruising about on the snow.

I thought it was very cool to see an insect cruising across the snow.
So I checked what kind I might have in my area(snow flea), and I have the Collembola species in my neck of the woods. Man, they were everywhere. At first, we saw them all over by some fresh Coyote tracks, and I literally thought they were fleas. Then I picked one up, and it clearly wasn't.
