Snake Probing

So I was taught finally how to probe snakes...so I was practicing on my male ball python to make sure it was male...and when I gently twisted the probe down in, his vent started to puff up like something was going to pop out...is that normal or did I hurt him?

Maybe you were squeezing his hemipene out...

Hopefully you were using some good water-based lubrication.
He was probably getting a little stressed and about to take a dump. Some species will sort of pop their hemipene out voluntarily when pissed off. Bloods do this but I'm not sure about balls.

he may have been trying to poop,but u shouldnt really hurt a snake unless you absolutly try to force it in,,its cool
