I gabbed a net and went to a small pond that was drying up in Texas. It was only about a foot deep when I went. I found this small fish. I thought it was a baby Pickerel at first. I don't know what it is. It didn't make it in my aquarium. The color is gone. You can't see in the picture but it has large pectoral fins. It's about two inches long and shaped kind of like a gar. I also found a leech on a Common Snapper. Guess I'll post it later.

That has to be it! Thanks. I've never noticed the shape of the mouth before. I also scooped up a bowfin.

You're welcome,

How close to the coast were/are you? Have you ever found any killifish?

I wasn't familiar with killifish. I went to Google images to find a picture. I've never seen one before but I have heard of them. I was on some property my parents own near Bryan Tx. Allot of it is Navasota River flood plain. I never know what I will find when the water recedes and leaves small ponds. They start drying up in the summer and the animals start getting concentrated. Of course, things start eating each other too. But it's easier to catch interesting things when they start drying up. One summer, there were thousands of baby spotted gar. I guess adults laid eggs on the grasses when it flooded. I also found one baby alligator gar. I never have seen another one of those out there. Interesting to watch in an aquarium. Here are some other things I found a few days ago.

Looks/sounds like you had fun! I like the snapper and the bowfin in particular.

I think down where you are you have Fundulus zebrinus...and on the coast some more Fundulus along with Adinia xenica.

It really is fun for me! I used to know my Tx fish but got caught up in the daily grind. I researched the fish names in your post and found out that I found one Fundulus notatus. I have it in my aquarium right now and is doing fine. I had a Siren in there but put it outside in a barrel full of rain water. Caught a few tadpoles and didn't want them to get eaten. They are small but I was hoping that they were bullfrog tads since the Bullfrog tads get really big. But, I think they are Cricket frog tads....DANG!
Oh, there is another fish I commonly catch there that is usually about two inches long. Pinkish, and shaped somewhat like a goldfish or a carp. The skin is like a catfish. They like to sit on the bottom. I caught one my last visit but didn't take a picture.

Dude I love the snapper! I have a soft spot for turtles. I used to keep them a few years back. How big was it? The fish are cool too. It is always weird to me to see the fish that are native to other parts of the counrty. We don't have anything even close to that where I live. Very cool, thanks for sharing man.

Sounds like you need to move! Ha! The Snappers are cool! The babies don't bite and make good aquarium turtles IMO. Here's another pic of that turtle.

Wow that is pretty good size! And yes I do need to move... I'm in the worst part of the country for my interests! :wall:

OT again(that other fish description prompts this) but does Aphredoderus sayanus(pirate perch) look familiar to you?
