Skunks as Pets

With the odd assortment of pets here, I figured I should ask if anyone here had a domestic skunk? They are interesting little things, kind of like the worlds most cuddly and nosy cat, and I finally put a deposit down on one for myself after several years of wanting one. As soon as my little stinky ball of fur shows up I will post some pics of it.

Just think of the humor value of the pet skunk...your yappy little dog will never scare a burglur but the would be crook sees a skunk sidle into the room he is out the first window he can find even if it is a second story. Heck he'll make one himself for that matter.

Getting a Pet Skunk

I had one for many years. Her name was Skittles. I got her at Ruby's Fur Farm in Iowa. They have "Kits" (baby skunks) of many color variety from white to grey. They are decented and only cost around $70.00.

They are not easy to keep. They require all cat vaccinations and you must check with your state to see if they are allowed. Also, only a select few Vets deal with them.

They dig holes throughout your house and will become quite mean if you do not have them speyed or neutered by their 3rd month of age. Also, you must constantly play with their feet or you will never be able to cut their 3 inch long nails. Also, their teeth are razor sharp and if they ever bite or scratch someone they are taken and put down immediately. This is done in every state.

Quite frankly, it is not worth the excitement of getting one. Skittles lived for almost 7 years.....and they were EXTREMELY hard years. I loved her but I would NEVER do it again.

FInd a different exotic pet.

Everyone is entitled to there own opinions, and I have seen yours quite clearly.. but keep in mind that just because it wasnt the pet for you doesnt mean its not the pet for someone else. They not only need cat shots, but dog shots as well. Mine will come as a baby, neutered and descented already. It also is a bit more than $70 bucks, but how much I do or dont pay doesnt mean anything in this situation. I am also well aware of the state laws regarding them, and know that the two states that we will be living in during the lifespan of the skunk kitten and beyond allow them. Georgia only says nothing in black and white, or solid black which is fine.. since mine is brown and white.
Like any other pet.. sometimes they just arent for you. I can happily say that after KNOWING I wanted one for many years, and spending time around them at various places.. even a smelly one.. that they are precocious and full of charm, energetic and cuddly.. ironically its like describing a few other of the family pets. Im sorry that it wasnt a good experience for you. Better luck with your next pets.. The Mrs. Hall

I totally agree with you, Mr. and Mrs. Hall. Even though I've never owned one, a good friend of mine has had her skunk for 12 years now, and she's been an awesome pet (the best pet she's ever had according to her :) ).

With the right care they are rewarding animals, and no more work than keeping another exotic pet adequately, like a ferret, for example.

I certainly can't wait to see pics of your new addition to the family. You all must be so excited about this.

Skunks are legal here in Jersey, too - but it'll take a whole lot more than just begging and pleading with my hubby for me to bring home another animal. :D (Plus, I don't think my dogs and birds would necessarily approve either.)

My family had one for three or four years back when I was a kid. It's mom got squished by a car and we always ended up with all the orphaned critters in the area. It mildly sprayed the vet when we got it descented, but it was pretty small still and not very potent.
Definatly a demanding pet but no worse than a cat or dog. My mom fed it so she was the favorite, it followed her everywhere, clickety, clickety on the hardwood floor. When the refrigerator door opened it would appear out of nowhere and be inside in a second. We'd give it a whole picked over chicken carcass and it would drag it down the cellar stairs and behind the freezer. Could never even find scaps to clean up, it evidently consumed the whole thing. It nibbled on my sisters finger once when she was sleeping but other than that was never overly aggressive. Was fairly affectionate, liked to sit on your lap and be scatched. Got along fine with the dog and the rabbit, would stamp it's feet and turn around with the tail up when annoyed. Was fairly clean, housebroken and didn't wreck anything in the house that I can remember, not nearly as bad as a ferret, for example. It proved very difficult to find a 'skunk sitter' if you went on vacation or whatever and that ended up being the reason we gave it up. A local farmer who 'sat' for us occasionally ended up with it.
