It must be an insect but I swear at a distance I thought it was a centipede. We have untold numbers of bugs here in the desert, especially in the summer.

It has six legs, two small ah, palps? feelers? and is about 3/4 inch long. Now will someone please tell me what it is?
Thanks.

It is a beetle larvae. Possible Carabidae or Staphylinidae, though the picture does not include the features really needed to establish a family identification. Any more info on where you found it? Location/local habitat? Whoops...see post below, I spoke a minute too soon.

I'd like to correct myself. I now believe it is a Rhaphidopteran (Snakefly) larvae. I knew something wasn't quite right. We don't have that order out on the East Coast, I've never seen a live larvae or adult! Probably genus Agulla.

I have snakeflies here but I don't think I've seen their larvae before. They ate aphids and other soft-bodied pests.
