I'm pretty sure online petitions are next to meaningless. If you want someone to pay attention, at least get real signatures on paper. Write real letters. Talk to real people.
"Click and forget" doesn't cut it, and it gives people a false sense of having already done something for whatever cause - quickly and easily and with no real effort. Then, feeling like they've done their bit, they don't do anything further (like writing letters and talking to people, which might actually accomplish something).
