I took these pics of 2 Crotalus cerastes laterorepens (Colorado Desert Sidewinders) last night while on patrol. Both of them were removed from the road after pics were taken before they became DOR. I hope you enjoy the pics as much as I enjoyed the snakes. It was a good night. I also logged 7 Western Banded Geckos. #1 and #2, first snake. #3 and #4, second snake.

If I was to keep a "Hot", it would be a Sidewinder. Trust me, I was going to throw one of these gorgeous serpents in the back of my truck and take it home. But, as we know, it is illegal to keep venemous serpents in CA. I know people do it, but I try to abide by the law :? As far as parties, well..........

Hmmm...I heard native venomous are ok? Of course, in CA it is perfectly legal to blow off a rattlers head in "sport take""No license is required for the take of a rattlesnake" or something along those lines...

You can keep 2 rattlers with a valid fishing liscence here in Ca.
Just cant buy or sell . . . without permit maybe???
I think sidewinders are protected tho, not sure but I think so.

The horns are so cool . . .

You can kill them all you want . . .
I was talking about keeping them, in which case one needs a valid fishing lisence . . .

But, I think sidewinders are protected thruought their range . . . no kill/no take

Folks who just up and kill every rattlesnake they see do so much damage to environments, they are natures pest control . . .
Just leave them be or carefully move them away if they are too close for comfort.
Believe me when I say that no rattlesnake WANTS to bite you, production of venom is a huge tax on their bodies, and theyd rather use it to get something to eat . . .
I think something like 95+% of rattlesnake bites are on peoples forearms/hands/fingers- pretty much tells me they were messing with it . . .

Rattlers are a beautiful and extremely useful animal, that all too often gets the short end of the stick, or the sharp end of a shovel as it were.

there is actually no limit on rattlers of any kind in california. the 2 snake limit applies to almost everything else though. you are required to have a fishing license though(which makes no sense to me)

my dog spotted a gorgeous pacific rattler yesterday and if i didn't live with my ophidiophobic girlfriend i would have seriously considered bringing it home.

Call the fishngame, dude . . .
To keep them captively, you can only have 2 and you need the lisence.
I dont make the rules, I TRY to follow them tho.

Like I said, you can KILL as many as you like . . .

In reality- whos gonna know you gotta rattler in a cage?

well, i read as much of that gibberish as i could stand and all i could find was that there is no limit on sport take of rattlers. i guess that depends on your idea of "sport" though, doesn't it?

f&g doesn't need a warrant to search your house(my understanding) so i suppose one could get in trouble in that case but seriously, they can legally write you up for having more than one limit of rockfish or salmon in your freezer too... doesn't mean they would bother.

not that i would want more than one anyway:}

Haha skippy. You would be surprised. Anything to write another ticket.

Don't expect them kicking down the door over 3 rattlers(though if they do find out, sure, they'll come for ya). But if you are in trouble for other reasons and get a visit then you'll surely get in trouble.

yeah, i got a ticket a few years ago for taking the skin off of 2 lingcod instead of leaving a 1 inch square patch for id purposes(of course, when they wrote the ticket it said "removed skin from 2 lingcod" which implies they could id it just fine). it ended up costing me $750 ($500 original fine and $250 added because i missed a $50 payment).

f&g don't mess around:eek: plus, they're kind of jerks:}
