It's "Betta." Two T's. And it's pronounced like "better," but without the R, not like the letter of the Greel alphabet. Sorry.....just a personal pet peeve of mine, and I saw a chance to spread the truth.

The truth shall set you free! :D

i don't keep them, i find bettas in general detestable (not the animal, just the conditions that htey are kept in, no more ranting by me now),

BUT that said, some of the show ones are nice to look at, but i won't buy them.

Hey, no problem! Your typo simply reminded me of the frequent mispronunciation, so I had to bring it up....

I bought a red male from show quality stock a couple years ago, had a few nice batches of babies from him. I haven't had any bettas since he died a few months ago, he was awesome looking, though. Here's a bad quality pic of him, he was getting kinda old when I took it anyway:

i used to breed regular one into half moon one in harder way, breed long tail one with double tailed, then breed thelong tail one with double tail genes with original shorttailed one, and back and forth, mix and breed after several generation, and get rid of the double tail ones and long tail ones, but not the short tail with both genes u'll get a half moon tail ones in... about 20 generation(or even more), i got the idea from"split the tail and make it larger", by the way the colour morph was tan yellow with back body
female is the point i think, get the right female, u'll have better chance with double tail genes or bigger tail genes
if u got the money u can just get a quality show betta with nice genes withou those laborious process...
just my 2 cents

My husband got me a bamboo plant in a vase with a beautiful, scarlet red betta last Valentines Day. Of course I put the fish in a real fish tank and I have had him ever since. I ended up naming him Bull Scarlet (he has the temperment of a stereotypical bull dog). I can understand the urge to rant about the conditions these beautiful fish are sold in, its deplorable.

But I have a question though, what is the expected lifespan of bettas?

the life span is not long, as they grow fast and breed fast, never heard one older than few years old(one- year old is pretty old, as they can mature in few months), the only way to keep their beauty last forever is to breed them...

Yup, In fact I'm waiting on a shipment from Thailand. I have a gorgeous triple banded pastel crowntail male and an opaque white CT female on the way, as we type. I breed pastels and I have a male at home, pink body, blue then pink fins. He's my breeding. I also have a gorgeous white halfmoon with splashes of pinkish red who is lovely. Steel blue HM I didn't breed this past summer so I'm low on bettas at the moment. In the summer I usually put out 35 gallon barrels in my yard and set up breeding pairs. I get loads of fry that way.

And as Rourke pointed out, pronunciation is BET TA not bayta. :wall: Beta is the 2nd letter in the greek alphabet and has ONE T. But I'm sure you knew that and it was only a typo. If we all jumped on everyone for typos, we'd have all jumped on Rourke for his correction post! {D

And speaking of which, Hey Rourke, I love your new avatar. It's very flattering. You look so much betta in it than your last one.

Life span

About 2 years on average. I've heard of a few going for 3. They die sooner when they aren't cared for properly. Thay are so hardy and tolerant of lousy water conditions, that people neglect them and they just won't live that long under those conditions.
