So I’m planning on get two male hissers in February, but I read they fight a bit over food and territory. Does that mean they should both have individual food dishes?
Hey there! My mum used to keep a small colony of hissers together in a 15 gallon tank, including several males. While the males can be territorial over both space and food, scuffles are most likely to occur when the enclosure is too small and food is scarce, causing the roaches to feel a need to compete. With our 15 gallon, there was plenty of room to go around, and when food was offered in plenty, the males would just leave one another alone.
You may offer separate food dishes, but that may not stop both guys from visiting the same dish. My family used to have lettuce, apples, carrots, and dog kibble all over the enclosures for the roaches in plenty, as to keep the competition at a minimum.
