In a Pet store rather close to me there is a Spider that I suspect as a H minax... they are calling it a "Black Velvet", how creative. $25. The only reason I haven't jumped on it before is that I have totally blowen the cap I have set for myself (30, I have 31), and how much deeper am I going to go into this? If I get this, when will I stop?!? Is $25 a good price for a 4.5" H minax (if that is what it really is)?

Guidance! I need guidance!!

And I know I have come to the WRONG place to get convinced to leave it there... in a X-small kritter keeper... no water... no hide... under incandesant lighting...

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it isn't H. minax.

But if you really want it, why don't you see if the pet store will accept a trade. Offer up 1, 2, or 3 of your least favorite tarantulas. Actually 1 or 2 of them, as I really don't think that it isn't H. minax that you'd be getting.

Go for it the poor thing. You were right about htis being the wrong place to ask for someone to tell you to leave it! Why set a cap for yourself. There is always room for just 1 more!:D

Listen, I got into the hobby two years ago because of my then 8 year old son. I never payed attention to tarantulas. To my suprise when we moved into our new house I was amazed at how muck spider paraphernalia he had collected on his own. He couldn't get enough!! All he needed was his own real "T". We started with a Grammostola Rosea first, and our collection has grown to 30 different species, I have no plans on stopping... Some arachnogeeks are born others are created!!! My son's love for these amazing creatures opened my eyes to the hobby. Why limit someting you love?
By the way if that was a H. minax you would know. It has a grayish cheveron on its abdomen. Besides it's "Psycho !!!"

It does have the cheveron markings on the abdomen, and it does have the typical Haplopelma attitude. From what I've seen around, it appears to me to be a H minax. And this pet store is known to get different types of Ts that aren't the basic rosies and red knees. I just might get her.... :p

$25 for any 4.5" T is worth it, even if its a male you can eventually mate it and get a 50/50 and easily make up the money by selling the slings. if that doesnt tempt you, be a hero and save the T from the horrible conditions.

In a local pet store $25 is a good price for just about ANYthing at 4.5". That is about rock bottom for anything that size in the stores around here, and they normally only carry G.rosea, A.avicularia, or A.seemani. Anything else normally goes for $30-$35 and up at smaller sizes, with a real chance that it's a male about to hit its ultimate molt. I just paid $30 for a mature male Haplopelma because it didn't look quite like what they were selling it as, and I was curious enough to want to get it home and try to confirm what it is and breed it with a fem if I can get one.

Anyhow... short answer is: Snatch the critter up!;P

I would bet that it's a H. longipedum which is what is selling as "minax" right now.

How much deeper are you going to go? Easy answer, you're already sunk! Give up the idea of a "cap" and buy what you want, when you want. It doesn't stop at 30, or 40 or 50...:D

Next thing you know, you'll be a breeder!

though it would be a sweet deal one thing that keeps me buying from pet stores is my undying support for captive rasied spiders and that if it is mistreated in the store and you buy it they will just buy and mistreat more... hey wait thats two things... some things on the other hand are too sweet to give up...

good luck in your decision-

Not yet. I went back to the store to get another look at it. If not a minax, really close. I didn't get it... yet. I am giving myself a week to think it over (check out the willpower). Do I want another "invisible" T? I get paid next Friday, and when bills get taken care of... I most probably will pick her up. :)

GO for it!! I am trying to maintain a "decent" sized collection and NOT go overboard... although I have well past that point if you ask anyone in my family or workplace.

well, I'm certainly not one you can ask LOL
My limited was supposed to be 20....
However, I got around that by breeding them. Once the first B albopilosum eggsac yielded over 600 slings, Mark realized that he was fighting a losing battle, and completely gave up :D
He says there is a moratorium on more pets in the house, what he *really* means is non arachnid pets!
