Should I sanitize the enclosure?

About a week ago I received an LP that was clumsy and sluggish. Package was delayed and when it arrived the package was pretty hot, thankfully the other critter in the package was a desert scorpion that had no issues with the heat.

Unfortunately the LP passed after a day. During the time she was alive she walked weirdly sometimes standing tall or curling her legs under her. When startled she tries to kick her setae but cant even reach her butt. Found her the next morning under the hide in a full death curl.

I don’t really have any Ts that are big enough for this enclosure so I thought I would save up and get another LP. My question is should I fully sanitize the enclosure even though she was only in there for around 30 hours? Would maybe just changing out the substrate be okay? Also wondering if anyone has had a similar experience with an unboxing.

sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, I’ve never really had an enclosure used for only a day. I specifically got the decor (wood and such) for this enclosure and it wasn’t cheap.

Yeah, man...why not? Better safe than sorry.

Also, I'm sorry for the loss, even if only a day. Did you reach out to the seller? He may cut you a break somewhere...

What have you to lose??
1.5 buckets of substrate and life plants I guess. I'm okay with the substrate, not sure if I can disinfect the life plants tho (dont mind throwing these away)

unfortunately no, she was kinda expensive too. it was a dead on arrival guarantee and she did arrive alive, did a whole unboxing video too just in case. Doesn't cover death after tho.

Still worth reaching out, letting him know what happened. He might not replace it, but he might cut you a break on another one. Worth the chat, at least. My opinion, anyways. If it were me, I'd explain it all, & just ask him, "what can you do for me?" Might be surprised.
Best of luck to you either way, friend.

yeah I did, he said nothing he can do he already sent a freebie too, said that it's to prevent from complaints from the customers' own faults. I also won't be buying the new LP from him since that was the last adult LP he had in stock.

Sorry to read of this terrible event.
This a Real Tragedy, Tarantula Arrives Sick as can be, Literally "On it's last legs" and is unable to recover..
You certainly didn't get what you payed for.
You are Entitled to a Refund.
If Seller doesn't compensate in some way, Seller doesn't have a heart.
Very Sad for this Tarantula and You also.

Why do you think you have to disinfect plants??

Nuts to him, then. Would've been good business to extend something towards you to make it right. Wasn't his fault, but it certainly wasn't yours, either. Take your business elsewhere...plenty of options, even the classifieds here.
Again, best of luck to you.

unfortunately most sellers here don't send them with insulation and ice packs. It's usually cardboard, tissue for padding (sometimes), and the container. Even had a tarantula come in with a giant wet balled up tissue in the container with it, which bounces around. Thankfully that T came alive. I find that they pack slings well but older specimens are very badly packed. Thankfully someone in my city has basically almost every T species I need, occasionally tho, I would have to order specific Ts from out of town and it really is a gamble, I try to see reviews and pictures of other peoples orders but it doesn't always show everything.

Why do you think you have to disinfect plants??
Well was thinking of just maybe not using the same ones. I just wanted to be safe JUST IN CASE something was wrong with the T and it was not just shipping error. Not really sure if that is necessary, maybe im just a bit paranoid

Why do the plants need to be tossed? You can still grow them.

The LP? An LP is pretty much the cheapest t money can buy....maybe H. mac is a little cheaper.....but geez, dont spend a lot on an LP......in fact, just go get a cheap spiderling. If its gonna cost you to get an LP, get a different species, like a chromatus or something.

Looking at your illustration, the t wasnt packaged well, and that kind of packing will almost certainly kill any t.

I cant figure that out either.

heck, I wouldnt disinfect anything.
will also be boiling the wood just in case.
OMG! NEVER EVER DO THIS! Water is the enemy of wood.....it absorbs water, this in turn will cause mold blooms over and over for years.

First off, wood doesnt need to be disinfected, neither does sub, in fact doing so leaves the wood/sub open to the first thing to colonize....which in every case will be mold....and with no competition, molds will run amok.

Now if you are paranoid and really feel the need to disinfect, do so with heat, not water....baking it is light years better than boiling....I cant believe this boiling thing has caught on like it has, there is no bigger mistake you can make with regards to wood.

I usually just leave them empty with dirt inside , if there was there for only a day I don’t see why it would need sanitized or cleaned. I only remove soil for storage.

If you have any expos nearby, you will have multiple vendors in one room and you see, buy and take home your T right there.

The LP was packaged in a container padded with tissue (the appropriate way of shipping Ts), in a box also padded with tissue. Unfortunately no insulation. It did seem that the package was abused by the post, it came in looking like they played kickball with it, plus it was in storage for a day or so. I’ve never had Ts come with insulation I think, the only things i’ve had come in with insulation and heat/cold packs are reptiles and dartfrogs.

Sorry think I was a bit paranoid that maybe the T had something. Oh by boiling i meant running warn water over it, and it’s not straight wood, it’s wood thats been treated with resin specifically made for Ts so it doesn’t mold. Thanks, ill make note to never boil wood ;)

The plants are just pothos plants I cut from my bioactives. I toss them out all the time as they are growing too big in my tanks. Should get fresh cuttings today while I do maintenance. Might as well use a new one.

I do already have a chromatus, and a bunch of larger growing Ts like xenes and phormictopus but they are all still juveniles. By expensive I just meant that it wasn’t the cheapest because of it’s age (more bummed out because of the availability of a large lp). I specifically wanted that specific LP because she was the perfect size for this one enclosure. It was $75 for a 7.5 inch LP.

Unfortunately these were from a seller at an expo. They didn’t really have much to choose from on their tables though, it was only curly hairs, pulchripes, chromatus, ect. And they were all slings (its probably better for them to bring small, common species). They recommended that I order online from them since they have the specific species I wanted.
