Blurry but you can see her fangs clamping down, applying enough pressure that you can hear the screen creaking like it's about to give way. Starting to wonder if it will hold :)

That is pretty freaky!!!

I would be wondering if that screen is strong enough too!!!

What species?

L. paraybana. The last time I measured she was 7 1/2". She's a pretty big girl which makes me even more worried :)

I would think that the screen should keep her in, I'm more worried about the T injuring itself by doing that. When she does that, how far above the substrate is she?

She's been doing it since I've had her, but only when pre-molt comes around.

And I keep all of my T's at safe distances from the ground if that's what you mean. She's no more than a leg span away.

Her getting out isn't a real concern since the screen hasn't been scaved in the 8 months of her doing this.

Several of my Ts do this too. I've been thinking for the longest time about getting some 1/4" plexy cut to the dimensions of the screen top and removing the faux wood rim from the screen rim and putting it on the plexy, then drilling a couple dozen holes in it for ventilation. I'm mostly concerned that one day one of my Ts will break a fang doing this. It's never happened, but I cringe at the thought every time one of them starts acting like this.

I'm not sure if they can break a fang in this way, but replacing the screen with plexiglass has crossed my mind too.

Atleast for this individual.

interestingly enough, my male L parahybana did this as well when he was in promolt. He ended up breaking one fang off about halfway up.
Of course once he molted he's got both fangs back, and he's in a different container in order to be next to both my females (he's mature now).
I never connected the behaviour with premolt, but now that I think about it, he only started doing it a few weeks before his ultimate molt...

My A. Iodius does the same thing. It's only three or four inches but the screen isn't quite as stout as yours seems to be. Anyway I caught mine chewing on it the same way. In this picture you can see what it's favorite corner looks like. The rest of the lid has the occasional bent wire where it got bored too.

Now that it's been shown that they can actually injure their fangs this way I am looking into replacing the lid with plexiglass.

Did he bleed much from the broken fang?

Thanks for the info Immortal.

Jim,
I never noticed his fang until he turned himself upsidedown for molting....so I have no idea when it even happened!
It didn't seem to impede his eating in anyway.
I posted molting pics here, but did a search, and can't find them.
It showed his broken fang...
