Hi everyone,

I have recently moved over to south africa for 3 months and 3 weeks ago i got stung by a scorpion... the doctor had told me it was a "parabuthus granulatus hottentotus".... being a skeptic I
looked all over the internet to draw some parallels.... I believed the species was "hottentotta trilineatus" due to the locality of where I'm residing (the western cape, cape town) but today we have found another scorpion...same species but I'm having doubts about it being the trilineatus now.... maybe its a hottentotta caboverdensis? there is not much information about the toxicity of the venom and I hope one of ya'll could fill me in... macro pics included! I don't think its any of the species you listed, the tail is too smooth for those. It could be immature as well. When I first saw the picture I thought maybe Lychas, but I don't thnk so. Im going to make a wild guess and say it might be some sort of Uroplectes.

That's an Uroplectes species. A gravid female...don't know the species precisely. Their venom is not life threatening, but stings can be painfull and can cause some discomfort....

So you think it may be more likely a "uroplectes lineatus" or a similar species? are these parthenogenetic?

It does not matter what I think it is (besides, I already stated I don't know the precise species. I would need to be able to study some specimens under the microscope, you can always send me some preserved specimens and I'll try to ID them for you:))..... Uroplectes species are not parthenogenetic (there are no scientific reports up till now that is).
There are a couple of people on here that now much more about Uroplectes species than me, so I am sure that someone will drop in and can give you info on the possible species.

thank you for your responses.... My family had been trying to get me to kill the poor bugger but I released her a few hours back.... hopefully she will raise a successful brood and keep the hell out of peoples houses!

No kidding. Life is hard enough when your anus hangs over your own head.
