My Asian Forest Scorpion has been hanging upside down on the lid of my tank. Is this normal? The first time I saw her do it I had just changed the substrate to jungle mix which has Douglas fir bark which I read might not be great. So I threw it away and replaced with coconut fiber and she was fine. Now she is back up there and has been up there for about a day an a half. Should I be worried or is she just hanging out.

It’s stuck. Get it down and prevent where it’s able to crawl up there.

Yeah, get that dude down ASAP what the hell. Get him down instead of posting about it on here, hes holding on for dear life because he might die if he falls. They should not be able to access the lid, you have a mistake somewhere. edit: A DAY AND A HALF???? DUDE, WHAT ARE YOU DOING??? They aren't strong enough to hold up their body forever upside down.

The heating lamp is a common red flag as well. No scorpion needs a heating lamp, aside from maybe some arid species. This is NOT an arid species. Also, it looks like a heavy duty reptile heating bulb. Maybe the scorpion is trying to escape a hostile habitat??

Every time I get her down she crawls right back up there. She has come down on her own as well but just goes right back

Also the lamp is only 50watts as it is chilly in my basement. Temp is 77 degrees with 70% humidity

Fought to get her off the lid and saw she was climbing my thermometer/hydrometer wires so I took them out for now. I don’t believe there is anything she can climb now.

i think you should consider using a side heat mat or one of the ceramic heat emitters that are like 25w because the red bulb could be throwing off it’s day/night cycle thus leading to disorientation and abnormal behavior patterns such as what you’ve described with hanging on the lid - the red bulb is actually perceivable to snakes, arachnids, etc contrary to how they’re marketed

i also think there has to be a means by which it is readily accessing the lid and that this should be eliminated as others have said because of the dangers - AFS are not bark scorpions so i don’t think it’s climbing the actual silicone or whatever on the sides but if you have like artificial hanging foliage or perhaps a large piece of décor that leads up to the screen i would take it out

i’ve never seen any of my AFS specimens do this and they’re p clumsy actually

I have many photos of my three H. silenus climbing the silicone in the corners of their enclosure. They've made it all the way to the lid many times. I have the mesh shielded by acrylic on the underside except for a small gap in the centre where they're not long enough to reach.

They did it more when they were smaller juveniles, but I still catch them way up near the lid and they are now one moult from adulthood.

My Asian Forest Scorpion (her name is Sting) has started climbing/crawling on the lid of my tank to. But I know she's not stuck. Cause she goes up and down on her own. I was just about to go back in the room and take a picture of her on the lid upside down. But when I went back in the room to take the picture. She climbed down. And went back into her homemade underground borrow that I have made for her. I don't know how my scorpion is getting on the lid. Cause I never actually see her climb up there. When I notice it she's already on the lid. So I don't really know how my scorpion is getting upside down on the lid.

Is it a wire mesh lid? If so, cover it or replace it ASAP. Scorpions are surprisingly good at climbing, and a wire mesh lid is asking for trouble. Just because it hasn’t gotten stuck yet doesn’t mean it won’t next time or the time after that. In general you either need to make sure that it cannot climb to the ceiling or that if it does so it cannot hurt itself. That means no wire mesh, a short fall height, and nothing hard or jagged to fall on.

I'm not really sure how I'll be able to cover it on the inside of the tank or with what? I don't really have much. And I'm on a fixed income barely able to afford rent. So I don't really have the extra money to buy something to cover it.

Depending on the dimensions of your screen, you might be able to find sheets of LEXAN that fit at your local hardware store or on Amazon. The store can usually cut it to size for you. Then you can drill holes and replace the screen or mount it directly under the mesh with an adhesive.

Alternatively, you can obtain strips of said material, or buy a big sheet and have it cut into lengths, and line the rim underneath the mesh in a way that your scorpion cannot reach the mesh.

It's usually around 10 bucks for a 12x12" sheet so just eat instant noodles and spam for a couple days.

I didn’t think scorpions could climb glass , is there something it’s climbing onto ? Like a big decoration..

If you spray water on the walls, and it dries, it leaves a little spot of minerals that provide traction that they can use as footholds. Or same thing, but dust or substrate dry on the glass they can use that as a foothold.

Also, they can climb the corners where the silicone is, as well as off any decor or equipment.
